You do know malasadas (actual Portuguese spelling malassadas, I've been told) are more like doughnuts without a hole than a bread? And if your sister had Champion malasadas on Beretania Street while she was in Honolulu, she probably had one of the ones with custard or chocolate filling, for which Champion is most famous.

Call ahead to Natas in Sherman Oaks (phone number above in my post). I tasted their plain malasada, and it was quite bland. It had a great texture and flavor, but just "flat" for my taste. I do believe that they have a stuffed version, but perhaps the dough is different.
They are very willing to please, so if you call ahead, they might make whatever you want.

Hello, lornamac!
There is a pastry shop in Sherman Oaks...sorry about the location. They have the real-deal! They also have some other pastries that are worth the drive!
Natas Pastries
13317 Ventura Boulevard
Sherman Oaks #818.788-8050If you call ahead, you will be sure to reserve what you want. The shop sits back in a tiny mini-mall; use the address because otherwise it is difficult to find.

Wow, you rock, complete with address and all! My sister is actually the one who lives in Santa Monica and has started this whole search. She came back from Hawaii raving about this and I wanted to surprise her. Thanks so much, Liu. While I'm at it, I am actually in the San Jose, CA area. Any spots here??!!
