My wife and sister in law will be in the city with two 6 year old girls this weekend. They want good mexican and Pampano seems to fit the bill. Would it be appropriate for the girls or is it too upscale. Any other ideas for mexican, preferably in Midtown, would be appreciated.

It's not fancy upscale..I don't forsee a problem with taking the kiddies. But it is not the typical Mexican, as in burritos and the like....check the menu before you go. I thought the food was very good; the place is relaxed.

I agree on both points - another option might be Rosa Mexicano - several locations.

I like Pampano but I don't think children would be impressed. I've actually never seen a child there. I agree with the Rosa Mexicano idea, especially the one near Lincoln Center. Ask for a table along the waterfall and they'll enjoy that as well as the food. It's a bit pricey for Mexican but generally I think the quality is good for the price. My daugher is older, but it's been one of her favorites since she was about 10.

Yes - the waterfall is fun - I've been there with other people's children and there's never been a problem. They have the same waterfall at the newer location - Flat Iron district.

I agree that Pampano might be a little formal with a less accessible Mexican menu for kids. The octopus there is amazing, as are the ceviches, but will the kids like it? I was a pretty adventurous eater as a child (loved escargot), but this might be too much for some. If you want to stay in that neighborhood, Mama Mexico is across the street. It is allot less serious, with all the usual fare, and a little more low-key (easier to get in) than Rosa Mexicano.

All that being said, it probably is a good thing to expose children to all sorts of situations/cuisines at a young age. I have some nephews/nieces who will eat nothing but hot-dogs - breaks a chowhounder's heart.

I mentioned this on another thread, but go to Pompano's lunch counter in the crystal pavillion (enter 50th street) -- their lunch menu runs cheap, 11-3.
