birthday dinner- not the Inn

So we're coming to DC in Mid January for a birthday, and our Aunt's favorite restaurant is The Inn at Little Washington, but we're not going to be able to go there (long story), but are there other places that you (collectively) could recommend? She also mentioned Kincaid's, but we're looking for something adventurous but maybe not just prix fixe.

Colvin Run Tavern, Tysons, Bob Kinkead's place, a la carte menu

2nd choice: Palena

I've also heard great things about Maestro

While I like the food at Kinkeads, I would not recommend it for an anniversary, due to the ambiance (lack there of).
