Spartacus Salad at Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz?

  • 7

Has anyone had the Spartacus Salad at Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz?
It is one of the best salads that I ever had.
The dressing was like a lemon herb vinagrette blended with tofu?
Does anyone have the dressing recipe or something similar?
Please help I need a great dressing to cover up the below average greens here in Philly!

  1. As a former long time resident of both Santa Cruz and Philadelphia, I would suggest eating seasonally there in Philly, or else you will bound to be disappointed. If you haven't yet, head over to the Reading Terminal Market or the Italian market and go nuts.

I never missed anything from Saturn after I left, but I desperately miss the tempeh la la at the Asian Rose. Nothing like it where I live now.

      Thanks desylicious.
Ive been to Reading terminal market-they have a new fair food market stand supporting local farmers!

Unfortunately, Asian Rose, and its sister restaurant Malabar, have closed. Don't know why. I loved their food. There is another Sri Lankan restaurant, Sri, in Santa Cruz that we've not yet tried (been around for a couple of years, I think). Stay away from the Jumping Monkey, so-called Indian food on Front St across from the metro station. Bad.

Malabar has not closed for good. There's a sign on their window saying that they're in the process of moving to Front St.--the old Rebecca's Mighty Muffin's locale. I thought Malabar was ok but not great the one time we went. Same goes for Sri. Agree that Jumping Monkey is awful.

I know nothing about this Spartacus Salad at Saturn, but I'll keep a look out for it next time I happen to be there.

Thanks Carb lover- look for me after you eat there and let me know if you can bribe the wait staff for the recipe!

      2. No way! Jumping Monkey is incredible! Everything is homemade. The samosas are awesome -- when was the last time you found a homemade samosa?

I follow acalchik here. I don't know why people have been getting so down on Jumping Monkey. I have been there 5 or so times, dating back to when they opened. Although the service is typical Santa Cruz Hippie laid-back (which is to say, practically non-existent), the food is good to better than good. I cannot say it is incredible or even great, but Jumping Monkey is definitely better than Royal Taj, which is a horrid grease pit with even worse service.
