Hardware Grill-Edmonton Review

I was up in Edmonton on business this week and I had the pleasure of going to the Hardware Grill for dinner with a number of work colleagues.
The ambience is very pleasing with a good mixture of old and new design sensibilities.The service for the most part was very professional and friendly without being cloying. The only complaint was that our waiter after taking our initial drink order diappeared for a little while...that was the only glitch over the course of the evening with respect to the service.
Now for the superb food. If I was to compare HG to a Calgary restaurant in terms of the menu I would say it quite similiar to The Belevedere. Lots of high end products (foie gras, truffles, porcini mushrooms) used in great combinations. Here is a sampling of what the table had to eat:

First Course
Pepper Crusted Ahi Tuna (Rare) with Warm Provençale Tomato Tart,
Wood Smoked Tomato Vinaigrette and Aged Balsamic

House Apple wood Smoked Salmon, Truffled Potato Perogies,
Grain Mustard Sauce & Canadian Salmon Caviar

Atlantic Scallops, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Brandade Potato Galette,
Chanterelle Emulsion, Roasted Red Pepper Butter

“Meat & Potato”
Seared Quebec Foie Gras, Mini Baked Potato, Truffle Butter and Fleur de Sel

Main Course:
Bacon Wrapped Elk Paired with Red Wine Short Ribs, Potato Gnocchi
Baby Spinach, Apple & Roasted Garlic, St.Ermite-Raspberry Reduction

Porcini Crusted Sea Bass, Lobster-Truffled Potato Crêpes,
White Corn-Arugula & Gulf Prawns, with Warm Portobello Vinaigrette

Alberta Beef Tenderloin, Blue Cheese-Gratin Potatoes, Roasted Chioggia
Beets, Horseradish Crème Fraîche, Bordelaise Sauce

Lamb Rib Eye Wrapped with Beef Short-Ribs and Foie Gras,
Pesto Roast Potatoes, Shoestring Vegetables, Zinfandel Reduction

I had the scallops to start followed by the Sea Bass and they were both superb. The rest of my fellow dining companions also raved about their food. The only criticism I would give to the food is that I ordered some Canadian artesinal cheeses for my dessert and the bread it came with was very dry and is too bad because the cheeses were very good.
All in all a great night but be warned it is very expensive...thank God for expense accounts. Cheers.

  1. BTW, I forgot to mention the superb wine list. The HG is a Wine Spectator award winner and so it was a real treat. I didn't order the wine so I can't recall the name of the wine but we had a very nice Shiraz.

      It has been quite some time since I have had dinner at Hardware. From your descriptions, I think it is time to go back.

      I have usually gone for lunch but unfortunately labour and staffing issues have resulted in the decision to restrict their hours to dinner.

      The comparison with Calgary's Belevedere is, in my opion, a good one vis-a-vis the "physical plant" and the food on offer.

        Hi Bob, its been quite some time since I have been to Edmonton and so I was delighted to see that Edmonton is keeping pace with the culinary explosion in Calgary.
