Bham - NOLA and back

Hello all...I'm living in Bham for a year on a job, trying to take in the best the region has to offer in my time here. For the 21-25th of Dec. I'm driving down to New Orleans, planning on taking 59 direct there, and 10 to 65 back. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good stops for food along the way (not too close to Bham). I'm thinking Meridian on the way for lunch (one place I noticed was Squealer's BBQ), given leaving in the morning, and I'm not sure about the way back, although I do want to take the girl to the beach, as she's never been (and I love seafood on the beach), though I'm not sure there will be good spots on the way back.

Regarding food type I'm primarily interested in bbq and other regional specialties, but I'm open. Sorry if this post rambles a bit, and thanks all for your help.

Me personally...I would skip Meridian for lunch and drive a while longer to Hattiesburg and stop at Leatha's (www.leathas.com) for some *delicious* barbecue.

Vrazel's in Gulfport, just across the street from the beach, is really good for supper, too. They do a lot of really nice fresh fish dishes in a bit more upscale environment.
