Hibachi in DC?

Kfine Dec 12, 2006 09:48 PM

I'm looking for a nice hibachi restaurant in the DC area, a place with good sushi, good drinks and of course good food! Money is not a problem because its for a special occasion.

Any recommendations?

I'm a bit confused about the connection between hibachi and sushi.

The hibachi places I have been to in the past have had sushi bars as well, and I would like to go to a place where we can get good sashimi appetizers.

Generally speaking, Hibachi is more American grown than Japanese. Given that, there's a Benihana in the Georgetown Park lower level and another one in Bethesda/Chevy Chase next to the Ruth's Chris.

To add, if you're considering places outside of DC, there's a sushi/teppenyaki restaurant in Falls Church that I go to often. It's called Genji, and it's not a chain, but they offer teppanyaki. The sushi chef is an ornery guy, but he makes great sushi. The best spicy tuna hand roll that I've ever had.

Genji is on Graham Road which is right off of rt. 50, next to the Magruders.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "special occassion" type place but the Matsutake near the Ballston Mall in Arlington has pretty good food and a sushi bar.

If all you're interested in is having food grilled at your table, you may be better off going the Korean BBQ route. I haven't been impressed with the places that ape Benihana. And some of the sushi available at Korean restaurants are quite good.

There used to be a Nichi Bei Kai (sp?) in Lutherville. I have no idea if it's still there (I don't much care for those kind of places).

                I find the food boring.

Sakura Japanese Steak & Sushi Bar in Fair Lakes is pretty good

The venerable Grace's Fortune (Chinese) in Bowie has just opened a hibachi/sushi restaurant in the new shopping center at the intersection of Rtes 450 and 704. If it's anything like Grace's, it'll be a winner.
