So I went to Chat Noir. The food was excellent. We had the salmon tartar and the scallops on a half shell to start and then the steak frites (i got the gorgonzala, he got the bernaise)and we had the chocolate cake for dessert. It was all wonderful. It was suprisingly crowded for a monday night but they sat us in the corner so I didn't mind the noise. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you want to go upscale, Cafe Boulud, on 76th St., b/t 5th & Madison, has superb cuisine; polished, yet cordial, service; and stylish contemporary decor. OpenTable shows availabilities at 6 and 9 p.m.
Cafe d'Alsace, on 2nd Av., near 88th St., is more casual. I've not been, but my daughter and her boyfriend, who have had dinner there several times, have praised the food and ambiance. OpenTable shows openings at 6:45 and 8:15.
