South Indian in Berkeley tonight: Where should I go?
I'm gonna be in Berkeley tonight w/ some friends, and I want South Indian food. I personally want to have a great masala dosa, although I don't know what my friends will want, but probably other South Indian specialties, maybe even dinner thalis if they have them.
Anyway, it looks like Vik's Chaat House is a good option, maybe better than Udupi? We will have a car, so location is somewhat flexible. Cheaper is probably better as long as it's still good. Not too concerned with surroundings, mainly just quality of food. Any advice? Thanks,
Dave MP

Apart from Udupi, Priya is probably the only other option for South Indian at dinner. I had their masala dosa a while ago and was not impressed. Udupi's is much better, I think. Of course, Viks' dosas (both the masala dosa as well as their vegetable dosa) are much superior, but they do close at 6pm.

FWIW, I thought Priya was a bit better than Udupi, but that isn't saying a whole lot. I'd go back, but I wouldn't make it a destination. Here is my report, buried at the bottom of this thread:

You should try Vik's sometime, Dave, though I doubt if you made it there tonight given the timing....

I ended up going for Indonesian/Singaporean instead at Jayakarta. http://www.chowhound.com/topics/349960

Vik's closes at 6pm, so that may not be an option for you.

Hope to hear some recs for South Indian besides Udupi, which isn't that good.
