Someone was asking about farm eggs recently on this board. I decided to try out one of the suggestions: Marin Sun Farm Eggs. Here is my report:

Marin Sun Farm Eggs come from Rhode Island Red and White Leghorn Crossbred chickens who spend their days in grassy pastures and eat a varied diet. You can buy them at the San Francisco Ferry Building Farmer's Market, $6 for half a dozen. Recently I have been having a craving for fresher eggs. First, the eggs they use at Tabla, who make a habit of buying their ingredients fresh from local farmers, piqued my interest for that old-fashioned eggy, eggy taste. Next I became smittten by the two eggs on my Pizza at Pizzetta 211. They use Rosie's Farm eggs and, wow, did they taste good. After that, I decided, no more lazily picking up a carton of eggs at Wholefoods, I had to get to the market and find the freshest eggs available instead.

Marin Sun Farm's eggs included a blue one in their carton. The romantic in me finds the idea of a blue-shelled egg quite exciting. It's like finding a piece of hidden treasure. The colour of the shell makes no difference to the taste, however. All of the eggs had the most intense, gorgeous, deep, golden yellow yolks.

Very pricey at $1 per egg. But the quality, the colour and the taste were very, very good. Yum!

Thanks for the heads up Sam. If you're ever up in Petaluma, there used to be a couple of places were you could get farm/fertile eggs. One was pretty interesting and entertaining from a kid's perspective because it was set up as sort of a vending machine contraption. In any case, one was my Aunt's family poultry farm, Broady Birds, and is no longer around, but I do believe it you search around, you'll find one or two still in business. Nice pix as always. Those yolks do indeed look quite rich and delicious. It'd be pretty extravagent, but can you imagine the creme brulee that those would make? I think you need to consider a career in food "styling" for your next life ;)

a sante,

That's funny -- someone was just telling me about a farm in Aptos that has a vending machine for its eggs -- sounds like it's worth checking out, and cheap (or should that be "cheep") too!

The poor chickens at Marin Sun Farms were wiped out. They are currently acquiring eggs from local suppliers and selling them under their lable. BUT they are receiving 1000 chickens soon and will be back on track with their own eggs.

I was at their mother ship (Point Reyes Station) after finding the link to their website via the Ferry Building website.
They had a few dozen eggs on display. I asked about their Aracona Chickens (you know the ones that lay the gorgeous blue and green Dr. Suessian specimens). He then disclosed the state of their chicken inventory.
However, I did enjoy the outsourced eggs tremendously so this should not discourage anyone from buying them.
