Curry Hill - Brief Update

dkstar1 Dec 7, 2006 08:39 PM

Just an update:

Curry in a Hurry is closed for renovations ("uh oh" or "about time", you decide).

Bombay Masala has, in my estimation, a very limited time before closing its doors. I've never seen more than 6 people sitting down inside at one time (I live a few doors down).

Curry Leaf is on a steady decline. My last two take out meals have been mediocre at best.

Roomali is still making very good wraps (roomalis) - I just wish he'd come up with a new one. A menu that short needs some sort of update or special once in awhile.

I just had dinner at Curry Leaf over the weekend and hadn't noticed any decline. Slow with the water refills, buts thats the usual there. Maybe you would feel differently if you consumed the food there?

I must agree with the thumbs-down review of Curry Leaf. I was there last friday and had one of the worst meals of my life. Old, dried out food that had undertones of rancidity. I will never eat there again.

I ordered from Curry in a Hurry at a friend's recommendation (I just mentioned this in another thread) recently and had the most awful food I've ever been asked to pay for. Good riddance.

Any recommendations for lunch delivery? Sometimes a girl's gotta have her curry, and because of my recent curr-appy lunch I've been ordering Thai curry.

I'd have to agree about Curry in a Hurry. I ate there once, and my stomach reacted to all the oil in the food as you'd expect. Suffice it to say that it was a very painful reaction, and the food was not nearly tasty enough to come close to making the aftereffects worthwhile.

I think this Saravaanas is the best out there even though I'm an avowed carnivore this place hits the spot everytime. The chili and onion uthappa and the thali are great

And a return to Copper Chimney recently confirmed great food (though comparatively pricier than its neighbors).

my lunch from madras mahal last week was solid, though not remarkable. takeout from haandi the day before, on the other hand, was pretty bad.

Is there nobody other than me who still checks in at Shipa Kasturi Pavilion, 83 Lex? Its a bangla place with good fish meat and veg curries, nice servers and mainly cabbie patrons. I think a plate of food with meat or fish rice and a veg is still $6, great value. When last I tried, the food still tasted very good (look out for fishbones)

thanks for the tip. i've moved it to the top of the lunch list. nice servers sound especially good to me after my last experience at haandi.

They are nice tiny bengali ladies - remember its mainly a steamtable joint- Ive taken out when Ive been there; its not exactly a place Id sit around -the steamtable selection is so good for my needs that Ive not even explored their a la carte offerings . Hope you report back

WOW they closed! I feel like they have always had the BEST tikka masala and I have eaten everywhere looking for something close - tamarind, all of 6th street...are they re-opening?

What do you all think of Banana Leaf? It's on Lex between 27th and 28th. I tried it and thought it was decent. I also like Chennai Garden.

Roomali is good, but I agree - he needs to do a new roll. I also get kati rolls from the small kati roll and chaat place on Lex and 27th. Decent smoothies as well.

Isn't Banana Leaf the reincarnation of Udupi Palace? To me, it's a loss. They've added northern Indian dishes and the Southern Indian dishes have suffered. The same waiters are there but not sure if ownership is the same (my guess is yes).
