I finally got around to trying the Bobby Orr (steak and cheese sub) at The Fours near North Station without the benefit of a preceding pitcher of draft Pilsner or two. It's a good-sized sub for $9, with a lot of cubes of steak-tip-type steak, rather oversalted, but with a nice char, juicy and not too tough. Good grilled onions, decent cheese, the roll a little fluffier and less chewy than I prefer, though thick enough not to sog through. Sides are decent: big steak fries with that orange-y spice coating you see sometimes on curly fries, a little crock of commercial-tasting baked beans, a dill pickle spear. Better than I expected, especially in a somewhat grim neighborhood that caters to undemanding pre-Garden crowds.

Your descriptions of neighborhoods are pretty funny, MC. Even with the elevated tracks gone, I still feel uneasy around there at night--I don't see a Hotel Commonwealth coming there anytime soon. How does the steak and cheese at The Fours compare to that of other places between, say, N. Station and S. Station?

I haven't tried a lot of steak subs in that particular corridor, but I'd say the Bobby Orr is superior to a decent one I had at Al's State Street Cafe. Al's has a better roll, and the $4 small is still huge, but the finely-chopped steak isn't nearly as good. I do like being called "Honey" by the nice ladies there, though.

The Silvertone does a tasty steak sandwich on excellent white toast with good onion rings for $11.

I'd guess my favorite of that bunch would be the shashlik kebab (sirloin) sandwich for $7.50 at Sultan's Kitchen, though there are other dishes I prefer there: the lamb donner kebab, the stuffed eggplant, the chicken/eggplant sub. I plan to keep exploring that menu, though the large portions are daunting.

The BBQ beef banh mi (spicy) at Mei Sum is probably better than all of them, and it's only $2.50, though the beef is closer to brisket or pot roast than steak.

Okay, why'd you have to go and mention the BBQ beef bahn mi at Mei Sum. I go mad for those freaking sandwiches!! Wouldn't it be dreamy if they had a drive-thru?

FWIW, many had raved about the steak sub at Ma Magoo's in Cambridge and I tried it this year. eh. I won't ever go back.
