Chefmate Dutch Oven for Target??
Can anyone find this pot? I read the review in Cook's Illustrated and would love to buy it but cannot find it anywhere on the internet or in a Target store near me.

I have been trying to find this too - Walmart despite the website saying several stores in my area havd them, did not have any. I called the manufacturer, Tramontina USA and they said that Walmart(and Target) would continue to carry them and that stores should begin to get them in after the holidays. If you can't wait, you can buy it directly from them for $74.00+shipping.

I know that some of you have been very lucky in finding this item. I have been searching for some time here in Tallahassee, Fl and to no avail. I contacted the customer service number and emailed Target, they could not assist me without a ASIN or DPCI #. If anyone still has the original box and can give me either of these I would be so thankful.

You can now find online, without calling customer service. On target.com, punch in 070/02/0962. It will pull up some CD but right above that, it says "don't see what you're looking for?" and a link. If you click on the link, it takes you right to the dutch oven and then you can punch in your zip code to find the closest stores to you which carry it. I just bought one in the Target on City Line Avenue in Philadelphia. (There were 2 more on the shelf) I can't wait to use it!

re: Linda513
It was a month ago for me. My parents in Kansas (I'm in NY) bought the last one in stock from their local Target store for me (thanks to the information in this thread, especially the instructions from LilBigEater) on September 26th. I think it might have been marked down or on clearnace, as (with tax) it was $38 and change.

I was just in the market for a new Dutch oven in order to make a sweet potato soup. (I lost my blue LeCrueset in the divorce. *weep*) Anyway, I, too, stumbled onto an article touting the Chefmate, so I scoured the local Targets and they are still available at TWO of my local Targets here in Chattanooga, Tennessee! Wow!

I have been shopping for a Dutch oven. I almost bought the Staub one the other night, but decided to comparison shop. I stumbled onto the Chefmate at my Target, and couldn't believe something that costs $40 could be decent. I priced LC's at Home goods -- still $89 -- and full-priced LCs today at my gourmet store -- $189.
So do you think I'm safe getting the Chefmate? There are at least four in stock, so I don't have to rush, but I am itching to use it.

I looked at this pot Thursday night and put it back because I didn't know what the quality would be like. Friday morning at work I googled it and found everybody raving and searching for it! So I went back last night and bought it. Today I cooked a spicy chicken dish I found on the web and it worked very well. I was pleased with it. I bought a nice looking little knob to replace the handle. I just need to get the right size screw. Overall I think it's a steal for $40. My store (Gastonia, NC) had two on the shelf. Both red.

so they do exist...
just picked up a 5qt. cast iron casserole at target (aka. the best budget dutch oven rated by cook's illustrated) last weekend. It was the last one on the shelf and it's called 4.5 qt. cast iron casserole in red by chefmate. Pricing is $40.
It's in red outside, white inside. Nob is heat-resisitent to 350F.
I called the store before I went there, and also guest services dept. with the product code. No luck, store manager said the product was discontinued, and would not be in stock ever again. The guest service dept. (a guy from India) said it was out of stock across Ohio. The customer service guy was funny, he picked up the phone and said 'let's get started, what's your name?'... and your mailing address?
Haven't got the chance to test the pot yet, look forward to it. -

Purchased one about 4 months ago at an Indianapolis area Target store and noticed last week they are out. I'm thrilled with mine and I use it more than I expected. This was a test - I wasn't about to spend what LC was charging, so I bought the next best thing just to see if I would like it and I haven't had a bit of trouble. I make sure I keep the oven temp at 350 or below as recommended and the bleach bath trick works wonders.

re: Spoonula
I have one also...it did not come with "instructions"...what exactly do you mean by keeping it as 350 degrees as "recommended"..by whom?
I use mine at 450 to 500 degrees for No knead bread (although I have put a brass knob I bought in the hardware store in place of the plastic one included.) It seems to work fine...I also used it at 350 degrees for a pot roast, with beautiful results....
and I really like the shade of red! ( do they only come in red?) anyway it is not "orangey-red" which my aesthetic sense appreciates!

I'm so glad to hear so many people have tried this pot out. I read the Cook's Illustrated review and was bummed b/c I've seen that pot at Target but assumed it wasn't as good as my 5.5 quart LC that I bought less than a year ago (which I'm in love with). I was like, darn I could have had the same quality for a fraction of the price!
I might pick one up, b/c it can't hurt to have two. Glad to hear it performs well!

Hi, folks. Noticed this thread and wanted to point out that Target actually said the pan would be in stores throughout 2007, not just January. It reappeared on target.com briefly, and sold out, but people are still finding them in stores. You do have to have that DPCI number,
070/02/0962 -- call the store and ask for Guest Services and give them the number. Good luck! -

I have been calling the Target 1-800 number for a few weeks now, and finally today they said they had a few of the Chefmate Dutch ovens at the Target store that is less than a mile from me. I called the store, put one on hold, and immediately hopped in the car to go pick it up. They had 3 more in the store, so if anyone is in the Columbus, OH area, go check out the store on Olentangy River Rd. The pot looks really nice, and I can't wait to use it! Good luck to everyone else who is still looking. Keep trying, and you will find one.

I just ordered it online.
For those of you that don't live with in a reasonable distance to a store that has them, you can do a search at target.com under the UCP number 070020962 (no spaces). The shipping is a little spendy, but it is still a bargain compared to what one would pay for the LC or Batali version.

I tried the corporate number trick, after trying a limited local store search. Certainly none available within 100, or even 200, miles of the Portland OR area. Anyone hear if Target plans to restock these things? (If they do, I bet we can expect a price increase).

I just managed to find one at the Mall 205 Target store a few days ago. I'd called several area stores a few weeks ago with no luck. A couple stores suggested calling back to check periodically because they get shipments in all the time, and their computers seemed to indicate the item could show up. I happened to call the 205 store the other day and they had one. So, if you keep checking with local stores, maybe you'll find one. Good luck!!

Thanks to all on this post I was FINALLY able to find this pot in the Los Angeles area. One tip if you've checked with Target and they tell you there are pots at a certain store and you find none on the shelves, be sure to ask someone to check in the back. They had 4 in the back of the last store I was told had one in this area.
While I was waiting I also stumbed across a cast iron dutch oven for 24.99 and advertised that it was already seasoned. I went with the one written about in the Cook's article. As far as I'm concerned that one article confirmed me subscribing for life.
And now one more question, does this pot need to be seasoned?

This is a great pot! I've had it for over a year, use it very often, even for the no-knead bread, and it's performed like a champ! n cracks, and any staining has cleaned up with bleach as mentioned above. Definitely worth the search!

I asked for this pot at our Target in suburban Brentwood//Richmond Heights, MO on Sunday morning. The saleswoman in housewares chuckled and replied that the store has been getting "lots of phone calls from people looking for that pot". She told me that she expected to be carrying the pot after Christmas.
I'll report if it ever arrives. In the meantime, for Chanukah, my husband gave me a 4 qt. Cuisinart pot that is oven-proof to 500 deg. (Bed, Bath and Beyond)

If you're looking for the ChefMate Dutch Oven supposedly at Target, and recommended highly in Cook's Illustrated, -- Good luck!
Here's how I found it:
Call Target's Corporate Customer Service Number -- 800.591.3869 -- and give them the UPC number, 070 020 962, which was posted earlier by Caphill2320 (THANKS!) and your zip code. They'll let you know which stores within 100 miles are carrying it.
Only one within 100 miles of Milwaukee had it. And I got the last one they had. And, they don't know if they'll get any more. It's apparently only supposed to be available through January anyway.
Good luck!

YES!!! I found one! I am headed over there to pick it up and cannot wait to get home tonight and start preparing to make the Bittman bread.
A tip: I read on the Cook's Illustrated boards that the pot will only be available through January of 2007, but the DCPI number is 070/02/0962, which is how they located the one I am getting.
Also, has anyone who has made the Bittman bread and used this pot tried removing the handles or wrapping in foil? I heard that they are only ovenproof to 350-400 degrees.

I just bought mine yesterday at the Target in Serramonte (west side of 280)...they only had 2... a beautiful deep red color...
They were NOT with the pots (go figure!) but with the ceramic casserole dishes...weird...this may be just a peculiarity of this store...I bought it for the NYTimes bread...I hated putting my beautiful All Clad in a 500 degree oven over and over...I have a bread rising right now, and will be inaugurating the new pot in a couple of hours...I'll report back on its' effectiveness!›4 Replies-

re: Bananna A.
It worked quite well...I covered the handle with 2 layers of aluminum foil and all seemed well, but if I have to screw it off and stuff the hole with foil, that would be no problem...It looks really good too...I don't know whether there are other colors, but the deep cherry red is very warming to see!

re: esg101
just do a Chowhound search for Bittman Bread ...and read on...mucho posting!
No-Knead Bread
Adapted from Jim Lahey, Sullivan Street Bakery
Time: About 1 1/2 hours plus 14 to 20 hours' rising3 cups all-purpose or bread flour, more for dusting
1/4 teaspoon instant yeast
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
Cornmeal or wheat bran as needed.1. In a large bowl combine flour, yeast and salt. Add 1 5/8 cups water, and stir until blended; dough will be shaggy and sticky. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let dough rest at least 12 hours, preferably about 18, at warm room temperature, about 70 degrees.
2. Dough is ready when its surface is dotted with bubbles. Lightly flour a work surface and place dough on it; sprinkle it with a little more flour and fold it over on itself once or twice. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest about 15 minutes.
3. Using just enough flour to keep dough from sticking to work surface or to your fingers, gently and quickly shape dough into a ball. Generously coat a cotton towel (not terry cloth) with flour, wheat bran or cornmeal; put dough seam side down on towel and dust with more flour, bran or cornmeal. Cover with another cotton towel and let rise for about 2 hours. When it is ready, dough will be more than double in size and will not readily spring back when poked with a finger.
4. At least a half-hour before dough is ready, heat oven to 450 degrees. Put a 6- to 8-quart heavy covered pot (cast iron, enamel, Pyrex or ceramic) in oven as it heats. When dough is ready, carefully remove pot from oven. Slide your hand under towel and turn dough over into pot, seam side up; it may look like a mess, but that is O.K. Shake pan once or twice if dough is unevenly distributed; it will straighten out as it bakes. Cover with lid and bake 30 minutes, then remove lid and bake another 15 to 30 minutes, until loaf is beautifully browned. Cool on a rack.

I bought my beautiful Mario Batali 6qt enameled cast iron stock pot for 59.00 on Amazon.com. This is one of many pots and pans that I've purchased on Amazon that say, "used". They're definitely not used...maybe a slight swirl in the finish or some kind of imperfection not really visible to the naked eye. I definitely recommend the Batali Enameled Cast Iron. I love my hand-me-down 40+ year old LeCreuset 10qt stock pot that's still going...even if the finish is wearing on the bottom. LeCreuset is just to expensive. I spend more on my professional grade fry pans, knives, etc.

I found this pot, thought that it had been mismarked, looked for telltale defects, SOMETHING to explain why this beautiful, enameled cast iron pot just cost $40. I bought it at Target, - they had two. Went back to buy another one after I had used the first, - incredible gift. I bought a second. Since then I've looked regularly (I'd buy more!)but haven't seen them. What a fluke. Just when Batali's came out at quadruple the price!

re: imok
I've got a couple of the same from Target (same deal...had to go back to get a second, and after that they disappeared).
But...and I hate to say this, as LC is just waaay out of my budget...the Target pots have stained terribly, and show some crazing in the enameling.
No, I don't subject them to heat that is too high. No I haven't shocked them temp-wise. Yes, I have always handled them carefully.
Is there a great difference in the enameling process that the lower-priced pots don't share with the LC?

I saw a 4.5 quart enameled cast iron dutch oven at Target the other day. Don't know if it was Chefmate, but it seems likely, as it was $40.
