Drinking, and a little Food, near Times Square, at 5pm?

Meetng up w/ a friend on Thursday before going to a film screening at 7pm...our plan is catch up over drinks beforehand, and maybe have a light snack of some sort...we're planning on meeting at 5...

Looking for a cute comfy cozy bar within a ten minute walk of 42nd/8th that serves some kind of tasty appetizer/ to all cuisines and all varieties of spirits, high-end and low-end...looking for somewhere charming or offbeat or novel or flat-out ridiculous...

Had considered the Russian Vodka Bar, but they might not be open at 5...

  1. I am a big fan of the Royalton. Not sure if it could be called cozy, but I definitely find it comfy and lots of fun.

    1. You might want to check out Bar 10 at The Westin. They open at 5 and serve light fare.

      1. I was going to recommend the Russian Vodka Bar until I saw your need for something "cute" or "cozy." It's definitely not either of those things, but if you're looking for something that you'll talk about afterwards it might be the spot for you. My sister and I went there several months ago and still laugh about it. We asked the bartender, a tall, blond woman, if she would give us a vodka that she felt was the best the bar had to offer. She told us that we should try this particular brand called Zehr (I think!). Anyway, she served it to us straight in shot glasses and expected us to down it immediately as a shot. Being that we are lightweights in the drinking department (despite the fact that my sister works for a major alchoholic beverage company!) we had a hard time doing this. The woman stared at us up and down with a look on her face that suggested she was not pleased. My sister then ordered a glass of water and after the woman turned her back we poured some of our vodka in the water glass to make it look as if we had enjoyed the Zehr.

I could tell that she thought we were complete idiots, but we still laugh about our experience with the Vodka "nazi!" No more vodka for you!

        Have fun!

actually i think of the Russian Vodka Bar was cozy, but that's probably the alcohol clouding my memory warmly...*smiles*

        2. I would suggest Tintol - a tapas place on 46th

That's exactly what I was going to recommend. Had lunch there a couple of weeks ago and can't wait to go back for drinks. Great food.
