Kyma in Atlanta: recommendations both pro & con?

My husband and I are planning to celebrate our anniversary this month and would like to try a restaurant to which we have not yet been.
We have been to the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton for their tasting menu, to Restaurant Eugene, to Joel, to Oceanaire, and to most of the other Buckhead Life places, and we are still open to ideas.

(a note here on dietary issues: my husband does not eat either meat nor shellfish in restaurants)

    1. I went the other night to use one of those gift cards that Buckhead Life periodically sends out. Rather than go extravagant, I just had a few apps and a couple of drinks. I really enjoyed the food- the octopus was charred and smoky. The a la carte platter items were good too. I had a few raw oysters, a prawn, and a lamb chop.

But the total for just those couple of items was nearly $30. And I didn't understand why they'd even list Greek potatoes and tzatziki sauce as sides with the platter. Five little slices of potato (probably about $0.05 worth) almost qualifies as a garnish. And I wasn't sure what to do with the dollop of sauce that was nearly the same size as the tiny stack of potatoes. I ended up leaving trying to decide whether to hit Krystal or Chick-fil-A on the way home (ended up settling for leftover Johnny's pizza at the house).

Maybe I ordered wrong, or I've been too far out of the fine dining loop, but sushi is generally the only time I expect to drop $30 and not get a full meal. And I'm OK with that. The other thing was just that, even though the bar wasn't crowded when I got there, the bartender was pretty indifferent. I think she was more focused on talking to folks she new at the other end of the bar. It only got worse as the place filled and she had to cover the bar, bar tables, and orders from the dining room.

        1. A friend of mine took me there for dinner when I was back in Atlanta for business (used to live there). It's pretty, and the food was good, but I thought it a little pricey for the quality. I've eaten at better places in Atlanta and had a more fulfilling dining experience for the price.

            1. Personally, I would go with Antica Posta down there. If your husband doesn't eat meat or shellfish in restaurants, then Antica's vegetarian pasta dishes should please him. I am not going to sugarcoat it, though - this place is PRICEY. But if you've been frequenting the Buckhead Life restaurants, then this is not going to be too shocking. I personally think it is some of the best Italian in Atlanta. But that's just me and people disagree all the time.

                1. Many thanks for the help with this! Nothing is so valuable as personal experiences in selecting a proper place to dine on a special occasion... that said, I am eliminating Kyma and rethinking the situation ... maybe McKendrick's and he can have the salmon (his usual) and I can eat meat (my favorite, preferably rare!) ...
