Edinburgh recs -- food and wine stores

Hi everyone!
Am heading to Edinburgh for 10 days over Christmast to visit my husband's family. Would like to avoid the usual exercise of buying all food items from Tesco! Am looking for recommendations for:
- good wine store (good, diverse selection of wine, port, etc - am also interested in interesting shop for different "microbrew" type beers)
- a good place to buy produce (I have heard that there is a Saturday market, what will the selection be like this time of year?)
- good place to buy desserts

Thanks in advance!

  1. I think there's still a farmer's market on every Saturday on Castle Terrace is a decent Italian deli with good, rare Italian wines is the best cheesemonger in Britain

Valvona & Crolla is more than just a decent Italian deli. It is most likely the best Italian deli in Great Britain. If anyone knows of a better one, please advise!

They also serve lunch in a room adjacent to the store. They may now also be serving dinner there as well.

    2. Valvona and Crolla brought me to my knees. I had tears of joy from my rocket pizza (in the cafe). I don't think I am exagerating when I say it was one of the best meals of my life. The grocery is wonderful if a bit pricey - worth it though.

Harvey Nichols is another option for groceries/deli, it is definitely beyond a Tesco.

Good place to buy dessert: Plaisir du chocolat.
The selection is overhwhelming, and more than just a little beautiful...little treasures. I had to go back for the bergamot chocolates. A feast for the senses.

      1. This is fantastic... exactly the foodie tips I was hoping for!
