Mario and Giada Xmas Special . . .

pitu Dec 4, 2006 12:59 AM

I only wish I was kidding!
They start in Boston, making ornate ravioli with colored pasta dough, shaped like wreaths and snowmen . . . they (okay, just Giada) end at the grocery store, buying JARS OF SAUCE for the special Christmas ziti al forno at Giada's house.

Semi-stilted somewhat trite voiceover from M. Batali, he and his toothy friend cover both coasts for Ital-Am specialties. The Tucci family does the Seven Fishes, a highlight of the show. They hit the right highpoints, but . . . ack, it just doesn't fly. All the depth that Batali brings to the Molto Mario shows is just blan'd out for a very typical FN night out. Bleck.

Isn't this special a couple of years old?

Yes - I saw it too and it was filmed in 2004 or 2005.

It was just on *my* tv....
but it could well be a holiday rerun -- I never looked at FN before this year...

Despite the schmaltz, they do get a few things right - marzipan from Maria's and torrone from Modern Pastry, in Boston's North End (North End pastries suck, so they were smart to home in on these excellent confections), and a panettone from New York's Sullivan Street bakery that I can't wait to try.
