Indian Buffets in SF/Peninsula?

Would like to introduce my BF to lunchtime Indian buffets - anyone know of a good place to try?

We walked by Shiva in downtown Mountain View but the price was $12.95 which I thought was pretty high but perhaps that's the going rate these days?

  1. I work around the area and heard that Amber India was a really good Indian buffet to try. I haven't had a chance to try it but let us know. I think it was about $12 a person for a weekday lunch and $13 a person for a weekend lunch.

However, I have tried Kebab and Curry's in Santa Clara. It was okay but I did like the tandoori chicken and it was $8 a person for a weekday lunch. The only quibble I had was that they only had about eight dishes out.

i've only been to amber india for dinner (and it's fantastic) and so i bet their buffet is up there as well. i guess for amber, $13 makes sense. i know i've seen places with signs that advertise $6.95! buffets so i'm wondering if those places are just as good too.

I've never had Kabab and Curry's buffet because nothing is labeled, nothing looks very appetizing, and the spread is small, though I've noticed most people there at lunch get the buffet. (The number of taxi drivers that eat here is quite impressive - I've counted five outside before).

I always order off the menu - but call ahead to make sure you're allowed to. During the lunch rush they sometimes don't allow anything but the buffet. Kabab and Curry does great things with meats. I highly recommend their chicken boti kebab, and we always get their chicken tikka masala (ctm) and naan.

      2. If you are willing to drive to the East Bay on a weekend, My husband and I have tried Indian buffets all over the Bay Area and our consistent favorite is Bombay Garden in Newark (off Mowry, a few blocks west of the mall). The buffet is huge so you can try many dishes. The food is a little on the salty side and moderately spicy. They also have a location in downtown San Mateo, but the selections are fewer. We haven't tried Amber's buffet but may do so for lunch today.

          1. Gaylord at Embarcadero One (upper level) in SF has a great buffet lunch!

            1. re: HoneybeeSF

Gaylord's buffet is $11.95 according to their website.

I don't know alot about Indian food and don't like most of it, so take this FWIW ... the first Indian food I ever had in my life was the buffet at Gaylord and it so turned me off to Indian food, that to this day most of it seems like those first tastes ... uninspired and same-tasting. It is probably just me because the rest of my co-workers loved the stuff. I mention this because the OP is introducing someone to Indian buffets, so that was my reaction being introduced to the food at Gaylord's. It didn't make me a fan. This was many years ago, so maybe they are better these days, but looking at the picture of the buffet in the link above, it doesn't seem like they've changed a thing in all these years.

            2. I've only had the dinner buffet at Passage to India in Mountain View, but they have a weekday lunch buffet as well (I would double check on it). Right now it's my favorite around - *huge* spread, unique dishes (lots of chaat), and it tastes great. The dinner buffet is on the higher end of buffets ($13), but totally worth it (and only on the weekends). It's good enough that the boyfriend chose it this year for his birthday dinner.

Other than that, I haven't sampled many buffets in San Francisco, but Tandoori Mahal at Kearny and Columbus is solid.

If you're willing to go farther south there's Mayuri in Santa Clara, and if you're willing to go east there's Priya in Berkeley.
