99 cents only wine of the week

La Belle Terrasse Syrah 2004, French Vin Pays

Full bodied moderately complex but a little rough around the edges, deep red table wine from Luengdoc region. Pronounced berry flavors with overtones of cherry and red currants, slightly medicinal and just slightly tannic. A tantalizing mix of flavors and textures that might strike your fancy but admittedly not for everyone (indeed, why not be picky when shelling out 99 cents of your own hard earned casho per bottle?).

For those who find favor, suggest pairings with roast leg of lamb, oven roasted potatoes, charbroiled sirloin steak, roast prime rib of beef, Hungarian goulash, peppered tri-tip, grilled asparagus and peppers, brushetta, pasta puttanesca and aged French blue cheeses. A votre sante!

  1. I missed your regular 99cts column, thanks for posting!
Loved your "slightly medicinal" qualifier, probably a trouvaille, never read it in Parker et al.
Please don't forget the precise location of the store, these 99 cts franchises are kind'a way too libertarian for systematic searches.

My haunts are the Huntington Beach outlets but the same wines pop up in many of the other LA area 99s that carry wine (some don't), especially along Hawthorne Blvd in So Bay.

    2. Where's your 'regular 99 cents column'? Never read it, would love to. That's an amazing little store!

Thanks, haven't posted the wine of the week in quite a while as the pickins have been slim. Not sure whether you can retrieve previous posts from the old site, they might be fun but all the wines covered are long gone fer sure. With 99 you snooze you loose.
