choucroute garni?

seeing a thread about cassoulet -- combined with the recent return to normalcy, weather-wise -- has put me in the mood for my own winter fave. any recommendations as to where i might chow down on a good, hearty choucroute?

dbBistro Moderne serves choucroute though I think only on Sunday. I've heard it's very good.

We thought the choucroute at Alsace was horrible. It was better at Jarnac, but I much prefer the one we make at home and adored what we had in Strasbourg.

Actually, Cafe d'Alsace has two versions: one is the traditional dish, made with various pork meats and sausages; the other is made with fish. I've not tried the fish, but the pork is pretty good. The sauerkraut itself is delicious.

If you can deal w/ all of Les Halles' service problems, then it is worth going for their choucroute. It is unctous and flavorful. You have to assume that Cafe d'Alsace has a decent one as well.

I don't know why one would have to assume that Cafe d'Alsace would have a decent one. They make a pretty mediocre tarte flambee that would be laughed out of Strasbourg.

Your right. That was a pretty strong assumption on my part. I should have said "One would HOPE Cafe d'Alsace...".

I am sorry to hear about the tarte flambe, which is truly hard to find in NY. There is nothing like the crust you find in Strasbourg.
