That's the way Star Bakery was for a while when someone tried to reopen it (before it became Curves). 40 loaves of Irish soda bread and a few cookies in an otherwise empty case doesn't bode well, unless it's at the END of the day.

A lot of us were all excited about the new Bleuss, but at least we still have Drewes. They very much get it.

I've often wondered about Star Bakery, since I love bakeries so much. And I covet the signage that's still affixed to the side of the building.

i live across the street from the old star bakery, an i abosolutely adored the signage and the beautiful golden and irredescent tiles on the outer walls. it brought tears to my eyes to watch the tiles drillled off and replaced by all things, cement!
i asked the workers there what they were going to do with the letters, and the star. they assumed they were going to the dump. they couldn't let me take one so i left my number to purchase one from the new owner. alas, i never heard back. at least i have some cool photos, but man i really don't like curves.
anyway, thanks for the info on the bernal place.

That's an understatement. They never advertised their opening, they kept confusing hours (including being closed on a Friday afternoon/evening -- a fish market in San Francisco?!) and kept irregular stock. I could walk there and it quickly became unworthy of the effort.

Bummer, because we talked to them a couple times before they opened and had really high hopes for the place.

Yeah, it was really odd. Apparently, they do a lot of restaurant business, but they had no idea how to do retail. The displays were almost completely empty except for a couple of pieces of meat here and there, and the lighting was poor and the glass murky, so it was really difficult to tell exactly what they had. Most businesses are on board with the fact that psychologically, consumers want to see a full shelf/display.

Are you talking about Bleuss Meats at the corner of Cortland and Elsie? It got a good review about a year ago, but apparently you had to ask for fish if you wanted it.

They seem to be closed now, from what I've seen. Too bad. It seems like they never quite got their act together.

I think they've closed up shop.

I've been in there 3 times and I'm still not sure what they do.
