Hi Folks,

Philly chowhound here asking for recommendations for fine dining in or around Englewood Florida. My in-laws are snow birds and we would like to give them a gift cert. to a restaurant they may not have tried. They are typically shorts and sandals type diners. I'd like to find something nice in their area (not asian, though). I was hoping to spend around $50 per person. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mapquest tells me there are two Englewoods in Florida -- one in the northeast by Jacksonville, the other southwest by Sarasota. Please let us know which one, and how far you think they'd be willing to drive. (Driving in Florida is a lot different than up north -- I remember when I lived in Jersey, an hour and a half down the shore seemed endless, while here I wouldn't think to cross 3 big counties just for a shopping trip.)

Also, I'm a bit confused -- do you want a "fine dining" place, or "shorts and sandals"?

Southwest, near Sarasota.. They typically eat at informal, casual places - I am hoping to find something different, that they probably have not tried - I am looking for a more formal dining experience. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for asking for the clarification. An hour drive would be fine.

It's been a while but a place called The Lock and Key on Manasota Key (Englewood's barrier island beach) had consistently good food, and good drinks. From the front door you can hear the surf from the Gulf.

Try The Perfect Caper in Punta Gorda, not far from Englewood

Barnicle Bills. Great menu, decent prices, and supergrouper.

Everyone anywhere near Englewood has to be going to Barnicle Bills on a regular basis. :-) If there is Bonefish Grill in that area, it's a very nice upscale chain.

The Lock and Key is a landmark and great choice. Here are a few more: The Gulfview Grill, right next door to the lock and key with outstanding views of the Gulf while you are dining. Then there is Farlows. It is on on the water, but not a great view. However, excellent food and beautiful setting. Very tropical for its location on 776.
Can't go wrong. Or, Sharky's in Venice. Directly on the Gulf of Mexico. You can eat indoors (more formal) or outdoors on the deck. They always have entertainment too.
