How long do dessert wines stay good after they have been opened?... and is it different depending on the type? i.e. ice wines, port, sherry, etc.

The sweeter and more acidic, the longer they last. Both sugar and acid are natural preservatives.

Thanks for the info! Actually.. with that said, can you recommend a dessert wine? Something that is readily available (I'll be able to find it in regular liquor store or wine shop)... and isn't too expensive... $20 or under.

Where are you? What's available in wine shops varies wildly from place to place.

Paradise for wine shopping. Ask on the Manhattan board for advice on a good shop near your work, go there and ask for advice.

There are actually some very good dessert wines made on Long Island.
