The Quiet Man in Southie -- Still in Business?
I had heard from a few people earlier this year that the Quiet Man Pub was being shut down and the building converted to (surprise, surprise!) luxury condos.
Well, I read a newspaper article yesterday that talked about the changes in Southie, and much of the article dealt with the "old" Southie, concentrating on the Quiet Man Pub. And they didn't mention anything about the place closing.
Anyone have any news on the place? I hope they stay open, as I love their steak tips and turkey tips.

I was at the Quiet Man the other night and they are still very much open. So, there is still time to have one of their Wednesday night prime ribs!!!!
The owner's son told me that it may close in December, but the deal with the condos is not final so anything goes! You know how these things go, Donovan's in Hyde Park was suppose to open in September; then October; then November......

Did he say anything about re-opening in Southie or Dorchester if the deal goes ahead? I really hope they can find another location if they do have to close. So many places that I like have closed or look like they may close in the future! (Eastern Pier, Quiet Man Pub, Olive Branch, Wish, etc.)
I also heard that the Playwright in Southie is being renovated extensively. Are they going more upscale? I liked the pre-renovations Playwright, though I still miss Molly Darcy's, which was in that spot a few years ago.

The son said that he didn't think his father would go for a new location. He, the son, now bartends at Intermission Tavern so I'm assuming he thought the condo thing was a done deal. Another interesting note is that his aunt owns B&G Oyster.
I was sad to read about Eastern Pier. I had finally gotten around to trying it over the summer and loved sitting out on the deck there.
Haven't heard anything about the Playwright. Never tried it I guess because I like Cafe Porta Bello. I did try the Junction in Southie and they had a delicious shepard's pie.

They should think about relocating to the Farragut House. The old restaurant is still there and they could hit the ground running. Not to mention that piece of real estate used to serve some great steak tips and prime rib.

Isn't the Farragut House being renovated? I thought they were going to re-open as an Irish restaurant/entertainment complex.

Farragut House has re-opened. They kept the low (table height) bar, fireplace (added a homey, cheery red mantel and spiffed up the rest with lots of picture frames on the wall. Large menu I think is trying to be all things to all people and is doomed to fail. So far: Tips were over done and tasteless. Mashed potatoes were scoops of cooked potato without any seasonings, butter, or cream - just bad. Shrimp scampi over linguini: 5 shrimp were OK but swimming in a gelatinous soup of bland saltiness, no garlc, and bits of chopped tomato. And, there wasn't enough linguini! Meatloaf: Not good. Menu says it comes with a side of onion gravy. My meatloaf had been drenched in gravy and then probably stuck uner the broiler which scorched the gravy. I still got the side of gravy (cold-right out of a can) in a small plastic cup. A dining companion ordered meatloaf, but was spared the broiled gravy. The new Farragut is busy now, but I predict the crowds will thin out after foodies begin leaving for tastier destinations. Message to the Farragut House: Come on Farragut, we in South Boston really want to patronize you, but please serve better food! A good meatloaf recipe is not that hard to come by. Shrimp scampi is easy to make. Mashed potatoes are not that complicated. "New" South Boston diners are a more discerning bunch.

Hee hee! Yes, some of the best steak tips in town. Sometimes it's good getting them with the main course there (beer)! ;-b

Enjoy them while you can. They're closing next month (Feb.). More "Luxury' (what else) condos.

Okay, so if The Quiet Man goes away, can someone tell me if Murphy's Law is a respectable substitute? I haven't dared to venture into that place to determine whether it serves food.

They've had bands there occasionally. Sure doesn't look like a food place but who =knows.

In my slightly crazier years, I've gone to places in Southie that most people wouldn't venture (Blackthorn [many times] and Shenanigan's, to name a couple), but I've always been nervous about Murphy's Law. Not sure why, but no one else I know will go there, either. Is it safer than it looks?

I actually didn't go see any of the band who played there. Be brave, it can't be that bad if older punky types are playing there.

tis a shady place. not quite like Triple o's was back in the day but definately a neighborhood joint. don't know if they serve food. only been in there after last call....

Murphy's law is a good place for a beer and a beating. No food.

Murphy's law does not serve food. I've never felt unsafe there although you probably will want to leave your argyle sweater and topsiders at home. Believe it or not it actually fills up with yuppies towards the later hours of friday and saturday night.

I mentioned Murphy's Law once to a Southie local and she warned me not to ever go in there....she was sorta joking but sorta not. Seemed to me it was a pretty seedy place and not necessarily a spot for just casually 'checking out" ......

Quite Man kitchen closes today, January 25th. Last big bash is the 26th and last day for a pour is February 3rd. Last chance for some really great steak tips.

I went last Saturday and it was very good.
We went last night (group of 5) and it was mobbed. They ran out of a bunch of stuff by 7:30 -- both food and things like wine glasses and silverware.
Service was ridiculously bad even accounting for the crowd.
A health inspector would have had a coronary watching the waitress handle money, tuck her ticket book down the back of her pants and then assemble salads by pulling chopped lettuce from a bag with her bare hands. The bag of lettuce was literally sitting on top of a pile of dirty dishes and was also touching a gaggle of empty beer bottles. This is not the kind of olace that should have an open kitchen.
The steak tips were delicious, as usual. Most of us ate our salads (one of us never was served his). We left her a better tip than she deserved but it's closing, after all, and she might not have a job.
They are having a Superbowl Party on the 3rd. $40 for all-you-can eat and I think I heard open bar (last part might be wrong). I imagine that will be a very wild time, indeed.

Yes, I did hear about the Superbowl party. I was at CF Donovans for the last game and it was good. They put out ribs; nachos etc., but it was loud! I'm thinking Artu for a little quieter venue this time. Did you get your last bash t-shirt at Quiet Man?

They ran out of shirts too!! Seriously. The guy who didn't get his salad wanted one.
But they were having more made up.
I'm superstitious, so I must watch at Sonny's.
