Report: Matyson for Anniversary Dinner
We had a lovely dinner at Matyson last week for our anniversary. From the person who answered the phone in such a friendly way to every course of the meal, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would high recommend it.
We opted not to have the tasting menu, but FYI that's 5 courses for $45 and the week's tasting menu can be found on http://www.matyson.com.
DH started with Grilled Octopus with Chorizo - we were amazed. Ok, it looked like a plate full of tentacles (which it was) but the flavor was meaty and smokey. Not fishy at all, more like steak in flavor.The texture held up to your bite, but was actually fairly soft and not in the least bit chewy or rubbery. We had never tried anything like it. The chorizo offered a meaty counterpoint with a bit of a spicy kick.Ah yes, fingerling potatos rounded that out nicely.
I had the Fried Oyster salad over brussel sprouts with onion jam. I loved the creamy oysters, which were delicately fried (not greasy at all), and the brussel sprouts were served as individual leaves so they picked up the flavor of the warm bacon dressing and sweet onions.
For our main course, we had the Lamb Shank (very tender, cinnamony, no fat at all) served over the lightest polenta cake I've ever had. Also the Steak Frites - good steak, cooked as ordered, with killer parmesean truffle fries. OMG. We ate every single one. We almost didn't want to have dessert to savor the flavor longer.
My DH had the butterscotch pudding which was a very very very rich whipped cream based pudding with a chocolate crinkle pudding. He loved it so much that when he cried uncle he insisted on taking home two tablespoons of it. The very friendly waitress laughed with us on bringing out the miniscule container.
I had the Lemon Souffle Tart with Raspberry Fool. So tart, this tart, that my mouth still waters when I think of it. Flavorful doesn't begin to cover it. Every bite was incredible, especially those that contained the crisp/delicate butter pastry shell. The raspberry fool was nice, but I almost couldn't taste it because my mouth was still tingling from the lemony-goodness. But the raspberry sauce that decorated the plate was nice and tart as well, which I thought went a little better (if you like that kind of thing).
We rolled out of there having spent $110, including tax and 20% tip. We figure a dinner for two would almost always cost about that if you got an appetizer/entree/dessert each, or if you got the $45 tasting menu each.
Parking directly across the street (William Penn house) is $2 less if you have Matyson validate the ticket.
