Need an upscale italian rec for my mother's 60th - thought of Babbo, Il mulino or l'mpero - any other suggestions??

I would immediately remove Il Mulino from your consideration, it is not very good. If you do a search, you will see numerous recent rants about their food, service, price, etc. Babbo and L'Impero are great choices and I would stick with one of them.

I wasn't overly impressed with L'Impero when I was there. Good pasta, unexceptional meat and fish; schizophrenic atmpsphere (the place doesn't seem to know whether it's swanky and hip or luxurious and dignified).

Babbo is a winner but hard to get into to.

Has anyone been to Fiamma Osteria? It had a fair amount of hype a few years ago, but I've never been.

I'm also wondering about Felidia. I haven't been there in 3 years or so, and I've heard some complain that it's getting a bit tired. But the occasions I've dined there in the past were truly memorable, with exquisite food and warm service.

I have been to Fiamma and thought it was good, but I believe that the chef recently left, so this might not be the time to try Fiamma.

        San Domenico. Alto.

I personally enjoy Il Giglio and completely forgot to mention their name in my original post. The service and atmosphere is very good and the food remains consistently good. The food there is a little more straight forward and simple than Babbo or L'Impero, which may or may not appeal to your mother.

Maybe you should throw Hearth into the mix, too. Delicious, excellent service, comfortable place, good wine list.
