Trattoria Trecolori closed for renovations - need new recommendations

Years ago chowhound members recommended Trattoria Trecolori to us for our annual holiday trip to NYC. They are closed for renovations until 01/07. I need your help again.

We are looking for something on the same lines. Italian. Late lunch. Casual dress. NY-old world Italian atomosphere. Family italian style is fine too.

This year we are taking the train to Penn Station and want to walk to the restaurant, then to the tree, then back to the train. Any great chocolate places (or hot chocolate/coffee dessert places) on the way back would be a bonus.

Thanks!

I love Roberto Passon which is on 9th Avenue and 50th Street. Have been there for both lunch and dinner and have been happy each time. Love their pastas. Friends have had the steaks, vegetables, and fish dishes and no complaints about anything, except maybe cramped tables. But lunch should be fine. I was there on Friday for lunch and the food was delicious. Tri-color salad, pasta with lamb rague and warm chocolate cake for dessert.

I'm a fan of Trecolori and have been keeping an eye on their website where the re-opening date announcement has slipped from September, to November, and now to January '07. :-(

I agree with GB3 that Roberto Passon is a good substitute though I think the food served there is a bit more creative than Trecolori's traditional style. Btw, Passon's tiramisu is quite the equal of Trecolori's seriously delicious version.

Note: While Trecolori stayed open throughout the day, Roberto Passon serves lunch until 3 p.m.
