Where Can I Buy Hardwood CHUNKS for my Smoker?

Does anyone know of any stores or mail-order (in Canada) that sell chunks of hardwood (hickory, apple, mesquite, etc.)? Hardwood chips are really easy to find, but I need chunks of dried wood for my electric smoker oven. I can order them from the States, but the shipping charges and brokerage fees are ridiculous.

Folks, please use the Cookware board to discuss smokers in detail. Such posts are off topic for this board. Thanks.

I get my apple wood from Ferri's Orchards in Mississauga(Heritage Rd. n. of Steeles). It's cheap and often free if I buy some apples+cider.OGB is worth a visit just to snoop around.

Called Ferri's today and they said they don't sell applewood for barbecues...

While places like Sobies and OGB have the best selection of woods, at least hickory and mesquite chunks should be widely available. My most recent supply of these is from Sunnybrook Home Hardware on Eglinton.

Although more expensive, you can get "branded" chunks at some supermarkets, Home Depot, etc. Weber is most widely available.

BTW, what kind of smoker do you have? Does it have any controls?

Hey Flavourgal-it's defintely wood, not charcoal.I picked up two boxes last week for my smoker-it's actually not chunks but small logs about 6" in length

I guess I will go up to Ont. Gas Bbq and check it out for myself. The guy on the phone might just be confused. Thanks.

As another FYI, ON Gas BBQ has 20lbs boxes of hickory and oak for around $18.00 as well. They are supposed to be getting apple and cheey in the Spring as well.

I was going to head up to O.G.Bbq, but decided to call first. They say their hickory chunks are $14.95 for a 5-pound bag.

They sell hickory CHARCOAL - 20 lbs for about $18.00. What I'm looking for is WOOD chunks, used for smoking foods.

FYI, I just called Sobie's. They have hickory chunks in stock, priced at what comes out to about $5.00 per pound. I just ordered a 40-pound box from Cookshack for $28.50 U.S. (about $0.70 per pound!). Their 20-pound box is $18.00 ($0.90 per pound).

I think I'll stick with Cookshack. Even considering the duty, taxes, brokerage and shipping, it's way cheaper than $5.00 a pound!

Thanks for all of your suggestions, though.

Thanks, weinstein. Checked out barbecuewood, and I'd have the same problems shipping from the U.S. to Canada (shipping, brokerage fees). Cookshack's prices are actually better, and got an email from them today, announcing that there are no shipping charges for any accessories (including wood) over $50 total ordered today. Think I'll order some and have it sent to my sister in the U.S.

                      Well heck, FGal.

My in-laws are in 'Bama and that's how I used to get my hickory. Pick it up while we're down visiting. I seldom use it anymore for reasons noted below.

If you want my advice, find the nearest apple farm and buy some wood from them. IMSWHO apple is the best wood to use.
You can also go to a sugar bush and get maple.
I use maple for fish and apple for everything else.

Don't miss Ontario Gas Barbeques. Despite the name, they carry a large range of charcoal gear and accessories+wood chips in most popular flavors.

Ontario Gas BBQ is a great store, but they limit their hours in off season so call them before you go. Right now they close weekdays at 5 and only open on the 2 Saturdays before Christmas. Plus they close right after Christmas so if you got a new bbq and you want supplies or anything else, go elsewhere.

Sobeys is great and has chunck as already noted

Just checked out Ontario Gas Bbq's hours. They are open during the winter, but only on weekdays.

Thanks, Ishmael. I was thinking of Sobie's, but they're closed today. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Sobie's Barbeques on Willowdale Ave. just north of Sheppard carries an extensive line of woods from North Carolina (I think). Good quality well dried and just the right size for home smoking
