Vinology in Ann Arbor

I'd like to take my SO there for his birthday next week. The menu looks interesting (although I'm not thrilled that they have a kid's menu... at a wine bar?). Reviews? Any recs?

  1. I've had a good time on both my visits there. And never seen any kids, despite the menu. Wine is sadly overpriced, which is just silly for a wine bar.

The tuna carpaccio with foie gras is awesome. The scallop entree with hazelnuts is quite tasty, although a bit on the sweet side. But really, I've never had anything there that I didn't like. Even their mini-burgers are good, with three different housemade "ketchups."

    1. The only time I was there was at their opening night bash and I was underwhelmed by the food and the service. The wine list is well chosen, if pricey, but the pricey part is understandable when you consider the investment that place represents. Nice room too and you can't beat the location.

      1. How pricey is pricey. Can we put some numbers to this?

They have a website with menus online:

Apps and small plates are $9-12, entrees are $15-$25. Wine averages around $10, with a number off options above, and not enough below.

Gosh, that doesn't seem pricey to me. I've gotten used to payiing ten to twelve bucks for a decent glass.

I went there with my son about 10 days ago. We both ordered a couple of small plates each and I had a glass of very good sauvignon blanc ($9). The food was great, especially the flash fried tuna and the mussels in a coconut milk broth with french fries (nice take on moules et frite). The fries were the best I've had in a long while. The check was about $65 before tips. Both of us thought it was great. Great atmoshphere too.

          2. Weird thing about Vinology is...they were better at lunch! Been to lunch there several times, never disappointed. The lobster club is excellent! Dinner...well, the scallops with macadamia my mom had were fantastic. I mean really, really good. It's been several months, I can't remember exactly what I had in great detail, but it was tenderloin swimming in what tasted like Granny Smith apple juice. Man, that was terrible. Would have been MUCH better with some of the tomato foam that they seem to use a lot. I can't recommend Vinology for dinner. What I had was so awful I can't imagine anyone tasted it first to see if it was good or if it worked.
