Thank you</content>

<content>Tough question: You are stayng right in the middle of mayhem, the center of all craziness, which consists mainly of a night long throwing of firecrackers...

You might not be aware, but the part of the city where you stay is the area where there will be the "Sylvesterpfad" (= path of New Years Eve), a mile-long chain of kiosks selling alcohol in any manifestation as well as different snacks. There will be open air concerts on every larger place, and about 500.000 people will pack densely into the small area. Ever been on Times Square at New Years Eve ? Something you may like if you are male and sixteen, but from your posting I suspect that this is not the case.

I would try to spend the evening somewhere in the outer districts. There are many moderatly expensive restaurants where you could stay. I would suggest for example Kuschker 44, a small local restaurant-lounge in the 18th district: www.kutschker44.at

They have a very nice six course dinner for EUR 50, which consists of their guests favorite dishes of this year: http://www.kutschker44.at/download/silvester2006.pdf

Book early...

Thank you for all of the information - I thought it would be busy, but not this busy.

I think we will look into your recommendation, which sounds good.

Thank you so much.</content>

      <content>Venus,

We too are staying near St Stephens Cathedral. I was a bit alarmed at the potential chaos. If you see a couple Floridians wandering around it will be us!

<content>There are two strategies to avoid the chaos:

1. Book a table at a restaurant close to your hotel, and stay inside for most of the evening, maybe just go outside for the midnight event of the large bell of St.Stephen ringing in the New Year. If you can hear it...

These places are close to St.Stephen:
Ristorante Firenze: http://www.kremslehnerhotels.at/rest_enoteca_haupt.htm
their Silvestermenu: http://www.traumportal.at/kremslehnerhotels/FirSilv.pdf

Cantinetta Antinori: http://www.antinori.it/eng/attorno_al_vino/index.php

Drei Husaren: http://www.drei-husaren.at/

K&#246;nig von Ungarn: http://www.kvu.at/e/starte.html

All these places are quite expensive, and you should reserve a table in time.

2. Or if you arrive in time, one or two days earlier, you may find a more quiet and "gem&#252;tlicher" restaurant outside the inner city. All the places mentioned here in earlier posts might be open, but you have to reserve a table in time, all will be heavily booked.

Beside Kutschker44 ( http://www.kutschker44.at) I can recommend:

Gaumenspiel: http://www.gaumenspiel.at/speisenkarte.php

Artner: http://www.artner.co.at/allgemein_dateien/pdf_dateien/silvestermenu_06.pdf

or
Das Cottage: http://www.das-cottage.com/spezialitaeten.htm

These places offer the same quality as inner city places for half the price...

<content>Thank you so much for the information, your right we have checked out some of the restaurants and they are really expensive, some of them &#163;100 per person.

We managed to get booked into kutschker44 on the 30th, but nothing yet for New Years Eve, so will try some of your other recommendations.

Do you think if we went on the outskirts of town on New Years Eve would we be able to get back to the centre of Vienna ok, or would it be difficult.

If no luck - we may bump into Dana in the frenzy!

Thank you again for the advice.</content>

<content>Vienna is quite a small and crowded place, and public transport by bus, tram and subway is available everywhere, and througout the whole night during New Years Eve. Taxis are also available all the time.

So getting back to the hotel will be no problem, although you might have to walk a few blocks.</content>

Thank you so much for all of your kind advice.

<content>Hi there Venus, we spent Xmas in Vienna last year and had a great dinner on Xmas Eve at Hotel Konig. It's a beautiful hotel with a lovely cocktail bar. We're flying back to Vienna on Thurs 28th and have just booked this evening for dinner on New Years Eve at 21.30. Fixed price menu 89 euros - can view their full menu on their website - www.kvu.at. We're also staying close to St.Stephens at a little pension we checked out last year. Saw posting by Dana - maybe we're all staying at same place. Why don't we meet for drinks, the more the merrier? Can highly recommend fab champagne &amp; oyster bar - Cafe Reiss - just off Kartnerstrasse and Marco d'Aviano - anyone will direct you there.
If you want to meet up beforehand post your reply back to this site and we can find a way to communicate directly to fix a time - Jeannie and Jack</content>

      <content>Hi there,
Thanks a lot for the info, we will be around in Vienna too. We are travelling from Spain to spend New Year's Eve in Vienna and then go to the New Year Concert on the 1st, so we'll need a nice restaurant for the night of the 31st.
Hope you all have a great time!
cheers

      <content>Bad news:
all the "nice" restaurants will have been booked already, but you may try one of the hotel restaurants mentioned earlier.

In addition to my prior posts I would also recommend the NYE dinner in Hotel Triest:
http://www.dastriest.at/en/restaurant/collio.html
not inexpensive for EUR 157,- but you will sit in a place designed by Terence Cochran and see a beautiful decorated oversize Xmas tree in their courtyard...</content>

<content>I know it's way too late to offer advice to most of the posters here, but on your next trip to Wien, please follow Sturmi's (and my) advice and go go go to Collio, the superb restaurant in Hotel das Triest! The hotel itself is quite special, too, and don't let the fact that it's not in the First District put you off: you can be anywhere in the city in minutes with the superb public transportation system.</content>

<content>Thanks for the recommendation, I will keep a note of that one.

I have quite a collection now, which is great. Fabios in the centre of Vienna was really good, one thing I can say is that the service in all of the the restaurants in vienna was outstanding which was wonderful and provided a most enjoyable experience.</content>
