Olive & Gourmando: UNREAL

On my last visit to Montreal (my hometown), I went to Olive & Gourmando, a rustic cafe in Old Montreal on St. Paul Street. The grilled sandwiches are amazing. People line up to get in and it's worth the wait. Perfect food in a very authentically Old Montreal atmosphere. It is closed on Sundays & Mondays, but I highly recommend it for lunch on any other day of the week. It was recently reviewed in Gourmet Magazine (March, 2005) & was recommended to me by a friend in Montreal. Enjoy!

My favorite sandwich at O+G is the Cubain Panini (Ham, roast pork, swiss, house-made chipotle mayo, and pickles on their wonderful bread), followed by the smoked trout pita, and with the grain-fed chicken, guacamole and mango sandwich a close third. Also, Dyan makes the best brownies in Montreal.

funny... I just had lunch there about 3 hours ago and had the cuban... tres bon, tres bon!! the pastries are wonderful and the chocolate loaf of bread looked wonderful...

          That chocolate espresso brownie...yummmmmmmm

      2. I was in Montreal in October and we picked up a loaf of the valhrona chocolate bread from Olive & Gourmando's amongst many other yummy pastries. The bread was fantastic. I'm still dreaming about it now. It's time for another trip ;-)

Am I correct, that their Valhrona chocolate bread is only made by them once a week(friday?)?

          1. re: BLM

I understand the chocolate bread (which is amazing) is made on Friday and Saturdays only.

        2. It is my understanding that O&G are closed for almost a month from December 23 or 24th until way into January. It might be a good idea to call them for the definite dates and not be surprised by a shut down tight O&G...

          1. I very much enjoyed O&G on my recent visit to Montreal, but found it to be one of the more overpriced stops on our visit. The food was very good, but for an "order at the counter" lunch I paid for a multi-course dinner!

            The brownie was delicious though...

            1. I've posted this before - but the secret on those fabulous brownies is out! Dyan Solomon shared her recipe with a local cooking show. Okay, so maybe we don't all make our own valrhona chocolate chips on a regular basis, but its nice to know you could, if you wanted to.
