We recently had dinner there. First of all the place was fair as far as atmosphere went. The food selections were very limited. They had a good number of entres. However, all bu 2 of them had crab meat in the recipe! Not much choice if you have a shellfish allergy.
Also, I had a pork dish. It was supposed to have 2 pieces of pork "stuffed" with apples and sage and rosemary. The "stuffing" was just thrown on top, the apples had the skins on , and there was something I could not identify in the dish, They looked like small squares of what could have been burnt fat! There was no sage or rosemary and the whole thing was covered with a massive amount of brown sugar glaze.By the time I got to the second slice of prk it was like a candy apple. My husband's meal was fair. No bread was served at the beginning Everything was al'a carte, Most entres were around $16.00,. You didn't get any salad with that. The entres consisted of the meat or fish and a vegetable. Not worth the price!

i think the main thing is that it's inconsistent. i live close by and it's above average for a divey neighborhood eatery. they have great burgers and i love their spinach salads. the peel & eat shrimp can be great but can be not so great. okay if it's a monday or wednesday and they were half off.
i have had some really great soups and specials there but other times had only average meals - only one thing i really didn't like - something with crab in it (there are indeed a lot).
i would say if you are going for a neighborhood joint it's pretty good and sometimes great; if you're looking for finer dining or you have to go out of your way to get there - don't bother. we go fairly often since it is literally less than 5 minutes from my house.
if you are in the area from somewhere else - both little venice and ichiban are more worth a drive imho - but very different from each other and from shackleford's!

I agree with Janet. Extremely ordinary.

I think it's inconsistent and overrated...both service and food.
