Great Italian at a great price in SAT
After reading John Griffin's article in Wednesday's Express-News about Gianni's Cucina and Pizzeria my husband and I decided to try it out last night. I must say it is a true gem. It's located on Perrin Beitel near the Wurzbach parkway in what looks to be an old mexican restaurant. I got the chicken marsala and my husband got gnocci with meat sauce. Both dishes came with a salad or soup and the chicken also came with a side of sphagetti with marinara. We both got salads which were your standard dinner salads, but the house dressing we got, tomato vingrette, was really tasty. Also before the meal they serve bread with their amazing marinara sauce. The bread, served very warm, is a basket of little rolls baked with a little garlic on the top. The sauce, also served hot with parmesan and herbs on top, is their house marinara sauce which I wanted to bottle up and take home by the gallon it was so good. Now to the main courses, my chicken marsala was good and homey, like grandma could have made it. It consisted of two very large chicken breasts pan fried with a generous portion of mushrooms on top with a mild, but lovely marsala wine sauce. I would order it again. My favorite thing though was my husband's gnocci. It was gnocci, little potato dumplings, in a traditional bolegnese meat sauce. The sauce was spicy and filling but I might have liked it becuase it had the same flavors of the wonderful marinara sauce. The gnocci were light and melted in mouth cooked perfectly, some of the best I've had in a while. All this said each entree costed around 8.95 and I took half of my chicken and pasta home. The one thing that some people might not like is that they don't have a liquor license and so you have to bring your own wine, which we did and they were great about it. Neither my husband or I were in a seafood mood but they have an extensive list of seafood dishes on the menu that looked very tasty, and people were readily ordering. They had a special escargo appetizer that looked and smelled god. The atmosphere is really not much to speak about, not fancy one bit, but the service was really good and they were busy with the article giving them such good praise.
