Thanks to foodiegirl's excellent recommendation, I checked out Latte Express for a snack at 5:30 PM today. I got the bbq pork banh mi and it was excellent. Freshly toasted baguette with mayo, cilantro, carrot, pickled onion and cucumber, chili and an extremely generous portion of tender, flavorful BBQ pork. Definitely worth the 4 dollars, and service was very friendly. On a normal day, half of the sandwich would have been a good enough snack, but today I was hungry so I ate the whole thing and had a smaller dinner later.

I had posted a week ago (see link) about finding snacks in the Union Square neighborhood, and at first it seemed like there wasn't much hope. But finding such a great sandwich at a place like that (looks like just another donut shop), at that price, and in that neighborhood is truly awesome. Chowhound really is quite an amazing website. Thanks again!

Thanks for reporting back, Dave!

I was at Union Square yesterday late afternoon myself yet again (a series of upcoming family and social events are requiring waayyy too much specialized shopping), but had to pick my daughter up at the airport after, and knew I wouldn't get dinner till late...I was kicking myself for not printing out the thread to try the Banh Mi myself, as I couldn't remember the exact location and didn't spot it....sigh. settled for beef jerkey from the airport snack shop when the plane was late. Cost more than your Banh Mi!

made a note for next time....
