Shredded Coconut?!?!

Hello fellow Hounds!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Wanted to know if anyone knows a good place to find shredded or grated coconut in the GTA? Will travel almost anywhere except the supermarket aisle for the tired, dried stuff.

Thanks in advance for the help.

  1. Welcome to the board! I like to buy mine at health food stores where you can often buy shredded, shaved, sweetened and unsweetened. Whole Foods has a good selection as well, if you're looking for different types of grated. The couple of bulk places in Kensington carry shredded coconut as well but only sweetened.

I'm almost sure that I saw unsweetened shredded and grated coconut in one of the Mexican dry goods stores in Kensigton, on the north side of Baldwin, near Augusta. It was in the one closer to Augusta. There were bins of both against the west wall, near the bottom row of containers, and it looked decently fresh. Other stuff I've bought there was fresh and of pretty good quality.

You could be right - I usually shop at the one that's a couple of doors east (closer to Spadina). Good to know.

    2. I buy my coconut in little India, usually BJ's supermarket. It is fresh and cheap. They usually only sell the finer shredded coconut.

      1. Go to any Asian grocer and look in the frozen section. They always have "fresh" (not dried) frozen shredded coconut and then you always have a stash in the freezer!
