I believe that I just had one of the best version of Carnitas plate ever. It is just around the corner near my work place in Oakland. It is a small taqueria with virtually no sitting area. The Carnitas is crispy and juicy at the same time, each with exploding with flavor.

Any other hounds share the same sentiments? If there is another place that serves a better version, I would love to try it.

The address is 1904 Franklin Street. Cross street 19th street.

Merle, I never tried their carnitas in the burito version but it is great in the axtlan plate version as you can taste the meat better. I think their salsa and guacamole is average. It is just the meat that I am impressed with.

Yeah, I remember loving their Axtlan plates when they first opened (maybe four years ago?). It had been a while, and I got the carnitas burrito to do a direct comparison with Taqueria del Sol -- which is not the most fair way of doing things.

If you work in the area and like the Aroma sandwiches, one secret is there's almost no line on Fridays. Every other day it's a zoo (and few sandwiches are worth a half hour wait...).

I ate there recently and was not enthralled by the carnitas. Then again, mine was in burrito form with some salsa that was not to my taste. If it was in the Axtlan plate, it might be better.

Memory suggests the chile verde there is quite tasty (although also not appropriate for burritos).

Have you tried Taqueria del Sol on 14th? I love their carnitas tacos and burritos. Plus, there's ample seating, and free chips and salsa...

Okay... I returned there today. Was not brave enough to try the carnitas, but tried the carne asada, and the chile verde. Both were pretty darn good.

I ordered soft tacos, though, which did not hold up in transit. And two of them was more expensive than the two taco plate (with rice and beans) at Taqueria del Sol.

I'll have to try the carnitas next time, though. It now seems likely that I did not like their burritos...

Growing up in LA and in a constant search for good Mexican food, my fav place for Carnitas has to be Jalisco's.

One word of warning, they have a weird schedule. Saturday and Sundays only, go before the late afternoon because they do sell out. You will be rewarded with perfect carnitas and a great salsa verde.

They also don't sell it by the pound the one time I asked. :(

Just had a carnitas taco over at Luna's at Bryant and 6th (near the flower market) - don't let the sterile ambience dissuade you. The carnitas were fabulous - crispy and juicy!

Also, we had a pollo verde super burrito, which was among the best burritos in the city! I know this is a shocking claim, but true!
