Can you drive about 40 minutes North? Thai Nakorn in Garden Grove is great Thai. It's across the street from the Garden Grove Medical Center, on Garden Grove Blvd just east of Harbor.

I used to live down in Laguna Hills (Nellie Gail area, my parents are still there) and we didn't find any great Thai down there. There was a Diho Siam restaurant near where La Paz hits Marguerite. Pretty decent but not spectacular, I'm not even sure if it's still there.

Yes Diho Siam is still there [with a half-Chinese, half-Thai menu]. But right down the street from there is a branch of Thai Nakorn. I would assume the quality is the same and that would save you a 40 minute trip to GG.

Actually, the consensus is that although the Mission Viejo Thai Nakorn is owned by a member of the family, the menu and food has been modified to suit local tastes. So it might not be the same as the one in GG.

I haven't tried it myself, but please let us know what you think if you try it.

I'm one of those people who thought the MV location was gringofied, and haven't been back in years. Things may have changed for the better, so by all means take one for the team and report back.

I haven't been to the GG location yet but, have been to the MV location several times and have not been impressed.

The Mission Viejo branch is owned by a family member (a sister), but is somewhat an embarrassment to Sab, the original's owner.
When asked, he will reluctantly admit a family tie and change the conversation.

Many locals love the food, but is bears only a distant connection to real Thai.
I have eaten there once, haven't returned, and would never recommend it.

Well, I don't know if you want to travel a bit further into Garden Grove. You probably already know this, but Thai Nakorn is the all-around favorite here on the board.

It *is* by all estimations, a "really, really good Thai place".

But it's quite a schlep from San Clemente.

Thai This in Dana Point off of PCH is wonderful thai! Very good menu, and amazing food. Whenever I'm down in South OC, that's one of my favorite places to go.

Ooh, was trying to remember the name of this place. When I was there he even had Thai "rum" at the bar.

I too live in SC and can feel your pain. I have finally found a very good spot in Dana Point but cannot remember the name because it has changed 3 times in the past year. The latest owners have hit the jackpotand do a great job. I recommend take out as the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired but the food should not be missed. Used to be Thai That, then Thai Mama and now....? Here is where you can find it.

I am looking forward to trying them but especially the one in Garden Grove. I have a friend up that way so maybe it will work out well. The Thai Place in Dana Point I beieve is gone. Although they had the dine in one a few blocks north, but last tiem I tried was not content at all. Although they are very nice.
