Krackel bar discontinued
I'm wondering if anyone has some info about this. My favorite candy bar has always been Krackel. It was always a little hard to find in a size other than in the mix of miniatures.
When visiting Hershey's Chocolate world, I'd always pick up a bunch of these, eat a few, freeze a few etc. I always found Krackel to be a thousand percent better than Nestle Crunch - mostly because Hershey makes much better chocolate.
At any rate, this past summer I didn't see them in stock at the chocolate world outlet, so I asked someone. They said they recently stopped making them in the regular size - they only make the minis for the assorted packages.
I was in a bad mood the rest of the day!!! Anyone know what's going on? Anyone seen them for sale anywhere.

Well, thats sad, but the minis are fine by me. They make a perfect addition to the mixed packages. If they made them with dark semisweet chocolate, that would be great.

re: EWSflash
The Krackel in the miniature are now made with vegetable oil based chocolate (mockolate) instead of this Pure Hershey's they've been advertising.
However, EWSflash, they do make a dark chocolate version. There's a set of Special Dark Miniatures that has both a dark Goodbar (though they don't call it that) and a dark Krackel.

re: typetive
Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, now that really fine chocolate is so much more widely available - instead of having to put up with whatever cheapass chocolate-like product Hershey's chooses to use, we can get some Rice Krispies and a sufficient quantity of somebody's 70% Dark and come up with something that leaves the old Krackel bar in the dust.
And I'm wondering if maybe toasting the Krispies in a pan with a little oil might help prevent sogginess...?

I know it wouldn't be quite the same as the original, but I'm wondering if it's possible to at least approximate them by making a Rice Krispie chocolate bark, using Hershey's chocolate? (Since bark isn't hard to do.)

re: Will Owen
Yes, Will, that's the question I've been mulling over somewhere there in the back of my mind ever since I read the question: Would the Krispies get moisture-logged and, if so, would they crisp back up if you chilled the bark for a while...or something? I'd like to figure it out, because it sounds like a good Christmas treat. Isn't there also a chocolate Krispie cereal? If so, there could be a double-chocolate-krispie bark for the diehards.

re: Normandie
Krispies hold up well when mixed with chocolate. They respond poorly to moisture, so make sure they're well coated in chocolate and they'll keep that crunch. Then make sure you store them in an airtight container.
I don't recommend the Coco Krispies for candy making because they're sweetened (and the regular ones really aren't) ... however, mixing it with some extra dark chocolate might actually be good because the sweetness would be so noticeable. (Instead of just competing with the sweetness of a milk chocolate.)
Definitely chose a low humidity day to work with it.

I found regular sized Krackel IN May 2008 on I-70 between Topeka and Alma. I don't eat them, but use them in birthday candy bar books that I make. The verbiage in the book that uses KRACKEL is to the effect, 'now that you are 60, we hope your HOT TAMALES don't sag and you don't forget to take your Geritol!'....next page, 'We would hate for your bones to KRACKEL and CRUNCH. (I guess the fact that Geritol is in there is a good indication of how long ago the thing was written! You don't hear of Geritol now.) They also discontinued MARS. It's verbiage was something like, 'turning 60 may put you on a ROCKY ROAD' .....next page, 'to the MILKY WAY or MARS!" I couldn't substitute Almond Snickers, so I replaced it with FIFTH AVENUE! If you find a place that has them, please let me know!!!!

Here's an interesting link about full-sized Krackel bars.
