Iron Skillet at Petro's Truck Stops

On some of our road trips, we sometimes stop at the Petro's truck stop and dive into the Iron Skillet buffets. It's fun to eat that stuff surrounded by all those truckers. On a basic comfort food level, it's not too bad for us Phillistine foodies.

But I'm sure that real Chowhounds might find it horrendous, right?

Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes! I LOVE Iron Skillet! And if you're stuck on the interstate at some ungodly early AM hour, their breakfast beats the living you-know-what out of Denny's and the like. At worst, it's a pleasant change-up from the standard highway fast food usual suspects. Sometimes even we Hounds are under time constraints and can't get off the highway to scout out those hidden gems.

Don't sell yourself short. Houndishness is the the eye (gut?) of the consumer.

It's been awhile since i've been in one but two Iron Skillets, stood out way above the rest,Amarillo Tx(omelet, and waffle stations on the buffet!),and Bordentown N.J., even the food on the fuel island was good there.

Petro does a pretty good job for truck stop food.

Personally, I prefer Flying J Truck Stops, especially those in the west as they offer 1) a lot of fresh fruit and fresh vegetable plates and 2) they offer the widest variety of beverages. They also offer fresh baked goods daily and they are of pretty good quality.

Unfortunately, the Illinois Flying J's don't seem to care ... at least that is the impression I have received from the managers who asked "Why do YOU care what we serve?" "Well, I pay the health care premiums for ten truck drivers."
