Edible Food In Redwood City!

As a Redwood City resident I have been watching, and hoping, that the downtown project will lead to some decent places to eat. I am pleased to say things are finally starting to look up.

Pho Dong on Broadway just opened this month. If you are anything like me a nice bowl of pho on a cool night can really hit the spot. I find their broth to have nice clean flavors. The decor is a nice step up from the usual dive "chic" of many pho places and the service is very enthusiastic. I have also been happy with the grilled pork and jasmine rice.

Mandaloun is another new comer. It has a nice warm inviting feel to it. The food is a bit of a melange where Mediterranean is rather loosely defined. They are trying to do some pretty intricate plating that works sometimes. They have a good deal on a trio of their small plates. I very much enjoyed the salt cod and fries (though it mostly tasted like good fish and chips and not too much like salt cod). The grilled veggies were good though I'm not sure about the triple helping of eggplant. Finally, I applaud the courage to put sardines on the menu and they are almost a complete success (nice mix of flavors though somehow they seemed dry). This place is trying to do city food in the burbs and, given the length of time they have been open, aren't doing half bad. I am hoping to get back soon and try some of their other plates. I will let you know how it goes.

Across the street is the Savvy Cellars is a friendly wine bar and next to the theater is Chipotle

If you live in the hood please join me in supporting our fledgling food scene to encourage even more to come! If you are out on a Thursday night you may even run into me. Now if we could just get Delfina and Tartine to open some sister shops...

  1. I wish we have an Old Port Lobster Shack in SF....

Hey, didn't a Beard Papa just open in Redwood City?

    1. re: anna

give them a few more weeks.

      they're having issues.

but...do go to the marble slab creamery next door for the meantime.

    2. You also have New Kappadocia there, which I and others have quite enjoyed over the years - the best Turkish I've had in the SF bay area with the possible exception of Troya on Clement St. in SF.

      1. re: adampaul

New Kappadokia is one of the things I most miss since moving from the Peninsula.

      2. Well there is a great Mexican food on Middlefield. If you try one a week it will take at least six months. Some better than others. You can do a search on this page.

        1. I agree! Also had a nice experience at Mandaloun. Romantic dining outdoors, no less!
We went on opening night. Are vegetarians & found the offerings nice & tailored a few for us. (got grilled figs sans bacon)

We support downtown all the time, walking there for movies, the Little & big Fox Theatres for great live music & as many restaurants
          as our waistlines permit. ;-)

The growing diversity of choices is encouraging!
Now we just need Caribbean, Cajun, and maybe an intimate little Greek cafe. :-) Ooo...and it seems it's lacking a decent Chinese spot?
But we don't mind too much, as that's not our fave cuisine anyway. We like some of the Thai offerings downtown & also have tried the new vietnamese spot near City Pub. We liked the Veggie Crepe, and I'm sure would like the fresh Spring Rolls. (but they were out the late night we went)
