grand sichuan St. Marks--inferior to other locations

Had lunch at the St. Mark's branch the other day--we used to love the Chelsea and mid-town west locations when we lived on the west side. Nothing we ordered had the flavor or snap of the other locations. We hade spinach with ginger, kung pao chicken, glass noodles with pork, and a soup with chicken and pea shoots. The kung pao and glass noodles in particular were bland, while our memories of them from chelsea were spicy and flavorful. Anyone noticed this location is much worse than the others, or have they all gone down-hill?

  1. My business partner and I have long thought considered the St. Marks location the best, but have noticed recently that they've toned down the spicng.

    1. I am a regular and haven't noticed any falloff in quality whatsoever - but maybe that's because they know my tastes.

But it's true that the Kung Pao is much more peppery at the ~50th St. location. I like hot food and actually found the Kung Pao at the Hell's Kitchen branch a little too hot even for me!

If you want really hot food at the St. Marks branch, try dishes like the Fish and Sour Cabbage in a Little Hot Wok. I don't think you'll feel cheated!

      1. I think the 50th Street location has also gone down. I ordered the softshell crabs and it came out to be a plate of peppers with hardly any crab. The quality has gone down. My last experience at the one in Chelsea was still positive, but I haven't gone for quite a while.

The Chelsea location has always been the best in my opinion. Though it can be a zoo in there.

I don't agree that it's the best, though I certainly like it. It's definitely a zoo, though, at peak hours. I have long thought that the Hell's Kitchen location was the best, overall.

        2. I had a very good meal today with a group of 12 at lunch. Most of the dishes were better than they had been recently, so I was really happy with the results. At least on par with the Hell's Kitchen branch which is the other Grand Sichuan I've been to recently.

          1. Just curious how the east side branch in the 50s compares to the other locations....I live nearby but have never been...

I live in the area too, but I don't think I'll go back to that place again.
