Looking for free-range/organic turkey in or around Lewisburg, PA

We're spending Thanksgiving in Lewisburg (with my anti-garlic mother-in-law, for those of you who saw my last post), and are looking for a place to procure a free-range/organic turkey (around 10 lbs.) -- we could buy said turkey in Brooklyn and transport it in the ol' station wagon to PA, but we don't want to be the people who take their food out of the city and into the country: it seems too backwards (table-to-farm?). Does anyone out there have any suggestions for a place along Interstate 80 b/w NY and PA? I just called the Natural Food & Garden Store on Route 45, and they don't carry them, nor did they have any suggestions for where else to turn. Buying it online is another (kind of sad) option...

  1. I have to admit that I'm not sure if my suggestion will work geographically. It may be a bit too far west for you -- I think the best way to get there is via the Northeast Extension of the PA turnpike. But Barb Shelly of Mountain View rocks - her eggs, chickens, turkey and susages are fantastic. Happy Thanksgiving and hope you find something good and and do-able, even if this isn't.

    1. Hi,
Get in touch with Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA).I'm sure they can help you out.

      1. http://www.pasafarming.org/ is the Pa. Sustainable Ag. association websight. Great folks, I'm sure they will have a source for a delish gobbler for you. Call soon, you have to put an advance order in for a turkey.

        1. Hi, I'm not sure if it's too late to order your turkey, but you can try Forks Farm, located outside of Bloomsburg and is off of 80 on your way. http://forksfarmmarket.com/forksfarmf...

Another possible option is the farm where I get my eggs. They are in Washingtonville which is between Bloomsburg and Danville, and probably easier to get to from Lewisburg.

I spoke to Cathy Kelly at White Frost Farm this morning, and they don't have any Turkeys left. She said you might want to try Bucky Zeigler in Limestonesville (on your way, right off of 80). His phone number is 570-437-2156. Another possibility is Bill Callahan at Cow-A-Hen farm in Mifflinburg, which is very close to Lewisburg. His number is 570-966-2678.

I don't believe that either have gone through the process to be certified as organic, but both use organic, sustainable practices and their birds are free-range and humanely raised. I've never had Bill's birds, but we buy his beef, sausage and bacon at the Lewisburg Grower's market and it's fantastic.

It just occured to me that you might try Ard's Farm Market, between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg. It's right up the road from the Natural Food and Garden Store on 45. Many of the farmers who sell at market during the summer, sell through Ard's in the off-season. Ard's carries a wide variety of local, organic and sustainable foods, so they might be taking orders for Turkeys.

          2. My family has been going to Koch's Turkey Farm for the last twenty years. They have a small retail store that has awesome cranberry relish. I heard they sell their turkeys to Whole Foods.

            Check them out at:

            1. I rec'd an email from a Slow Food friend this morning about this farm. They still have some turkey's left and pickup is next Tues/Wed.
