Tam O'Shanter Ale and Sandwich Bar

What's the protocol for eating at the Ale and Sandwich bar at Tam O'Shanter? Do you sit down and someone takes your order or do you order your sandwich at the cutting station? Can you order off the regular menu?

  1. It seems to work every possible way. You can sit and someone will take your order. Sometimes, it's the carver. Or you can order directly from him, fast food style. If you want something from the regular menu, just ask him or a server and they'll get it for you. It's very informal. It's also very good.

    1. When is the sandwich bar open? Is it only on weekday lunches?

        According to their website:
        Sun - Fri: 11:00 am - 9:00 pm
        Saturday: 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

OK, cool, so you can get it for dinner on a Friday. It's always closed when I go but maybe I usually go on Saturdays.

      2. If you are not in the mood for a sandwhich from the carver, they also do a pretty decent burger at the 'Tam.

        1. Avoid the ribs. They boil them then slather some BBQ sauce on them...huge abomination for such an established restaurant.

          1. What kind of sandwiches are we talking here? Of course prime rib (I assume) but anything else? Prices? Thanks.

            1. Hand carved sandwiches include prime rib, beef brisket, pastrami, corned beef, turkey or ham. All sandwiches include (all you can eat) their signature peanut slaw, potato salad, pickles and beets. Sandwiches are $8.95 and the prime rib sandwich is $9.95. They also have their Chef Ivan chili. They also have a separate bar menu which is has dishes from their normal menu and naturally if you or someone in your party want to order off their regular menu you may do so.

The sandwich bar at the Tam O'Shanter is the prototype for the Lawry's Carvery at South Coast Plaza

Went yesterday for lunch and ordered at the carving station. Prime rib sandwich is $12 and the rest are $10. Prime rib platter, which I had with creamed spinach, is $18 and the rest are $15. Platters with 2 choices of meat are $17. Bag of chips are $1.

That's all well and good, but you left out the most important detail: was it tasty? ;-)

Its been a several months since I've been, thanks for the update on the prices. I remember when the sandwiches were $6.95.
Sandwiches are good because the meat is good. Still a pretty good deal at those prices.

                2. If you like your prime rib medium-rare, get there by 7. The cream horseradish is hard to beat. Pork is my alternative if I am not in a prime rib mood.
