I know all the west side and LES great cake sources: Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Billy's, Cupcake Cafe, Magnolia's, etc. Where can one get cake by the slice or cupcakes in the East Village?
go to Veniero's...you will not be disappointed. great strawberry shortcake, tiramisu cake, chocolate sponge cake with bananas and strawberries, etc. all by the slice or whole cake. they also have wonderful pastries and a fine cappucino to boot.
