Ham for Thanksgiving

Can anyone point me to a place that I can get a good ham to go for thanksgiving?

I do not feel like cooking ham and turkey so we are just going to cook the turkey and buy a ham. So far its just Honeybaked as the main option.

Come one guys help me out.

Thanks

Hey Guys, let's try and keep this board focused on where to find great chow in the LA area. Mail order recs are off-topic here, and belong on the General Topics board.

I understand and strictly speaking, yes, but if we are searching for a ham to take home, discriminating between whether we bring the ham home ourselves or whether it is delivered to us by post, would seem to be a bit of a fine distinction, inhibiting us from exposure to the best sources. Perhaps the whole thread should be moved, if the limitation is to "restaurant food consumed on-premises." But, I am not that knowledgeable re the rules.

i'd have to agree with the Costco ham...it's pretty good - and not that expensive compare to Honeybaked - although both places get really crazy around the holidays...

You can order one from Nick's cafe downtown. Same as the ham
        they serve with breakfast. MMM!

The spiral sliced ham at Costco is a good option, and so is the Farmer John s/s ham at Smart and Final. Many stores have the bizarre/stupid policy of only carrying s/s hams around Thanksgiving and Christmas; per Farmer John they produce them year round.

Can anyone confirm which 99 Ranch or other markets around here carry Smithfield or other country style hams? I know Bristol Farms does but I'm not willing to take out a second mortgage :-(.

I just purchase a Smithfield Country Ham from costco today. Full cooked. $4.49/pound

              Which Costco store?
I've never seen Smithfield 'country' hams in (California) Costco , only city hams on infrequent occasions.

If you end up at Honeybaked, just be prepared for the pickup line. I always end up running into a Pier1 (shopping mall in Glendale) just before Thanksgiving for last minute candles, and find a line that run around the block. Literally. It's the people waiting to pick up their Honeybaked hams.

I don't think Honeybaked is bad, and I agree that Burger's Smokehouse is pretty good too. That said, the best hams I've ever had are the Kurobuta hams available through David Rosengarten's website: http://rosengartenreport.com/ham/inde... .

Hyperbole aside, they really are phenomenally good.

Be easier if you bought a pre-cooked turkey and "heated" up a ham.

I have been ordering hams for years from Burger's Smokehouse in California, MO - http://www.smokehouse.com/
A couple of years ago, one of the major food 'zines said theirs was the best in the country. Can't say because I haven't had the pleasure of trying them all, but this one is terrific. And I'm sure that others on CH will disagree and tout their own faves.
Burger's has all varieties from mild - City Ham, which is what I get for parties - to real strong Attic-cured country hams. They ship the glaze separately so you don't have to use it. I never do because I loathe all that sweet crap which is why I don't like Honey Baked.
The best part is their shipping is great, you don't have to go to the store, another thing off your to-do list. And I think ít's cheaper than Honey Baked.

I was pleasantly surprised by the ham from Costco. It comes with the honey glaze as well. Without the Honeybaked price...

My parents got a CostCo ham last year- it was surprisingly good. Unfortunately they didn't tell me they weren't cooking turkey. Who doesn't have turkey for Thanksgiving?

Yes, surprisingly good, particularly for the price.

I wish I knew a better place than Honeybaked for Ham, but Honeybaked is probably one of the best hams I have ever had!
