i've had several meals at Somerset since they opened (I want to like them, it's very near my job), and while I can't say a single one was bad, the overall impression I have is overkill. There is always a little too much, a little too rich. The dish that exemplified this for me was the butter lettuce salad, which had sliced shreds of butter lettuce with blue cheese, egg, I think bacon too, and desperately welcomed toybox tomatoes. I separated at least a quarter cup of blue cheese out and still every bite I took was laden with it. The "fritto misto"with calamari and artichokes used canned marinated artichokes, as does the "black olive and artichoke tart" which is actually a quiche with the mentioned ingredients.
The prawn enchiladas are made with flour tortillas (totally weird to me) and the roasted poblano sauce is tasty but not at all recognizable as Mexican. It came with a cabbage slaw which was the only light tasting item I've ever had there, a very small serving, and rice, which had the consistency of jambalaya (wet) with a nice bit of heat and too much tomato.
I did love the steak sandwich, and I love the side broccoli salad ( with bacon). The salmon with vegetable hash was delicious but the fingerling potatoes in the hash tasted like leftover deep-fried potatoes, maybe from brunch? All the other vegetable were fresh.
So I can't say skip it, I keep hoping it will be great, but if the chef or owner reads this I want to just say—lighten up a bit!
