Essex County restaurant rec's for a gift certificate?

With the holidays approaching, I wondered if I could get the opinion of Essex County residents as to where might be a good restaurant to get a gift certificate for my dad for Christmas ? I'm looking for a mid-upper range restaurant. My dad is 56, has a girlfriend, loves Italian and other Continental cuisines...

  1. Lorena's, in Maplewood, is one of the best restaurants in NJ. Chef/owner Humberbo Campos' cuisine is superb. Lorena, manager George, and their small staff provide cordial, professional service. The small, cozy space has very charming decor. It's a BYO. I have no doubt that your father and his gf will love it as much as we do.

    1. Fabulous recommendation - and they have gift cards online, which is perfect!

Thanks so much - it's so HARD buying for my dad usually but I think he'll love this.

So glad that you liked my suggestion. I think the gift card is relatively new. Your screen name indicates you live in Brooklyn, so it's a good bet you'll be doing this by phone. Since they don't serve lunch, it's best to call after 4 p.m. when Lorena is there to answer the phone.

Btw, it just so happens that we have a reservation there this evening. We've dined there countless times, and have never, ever been disappointed. Humberto is a terrific chef and he, Lorena (his fiancee), and George are the nicest people. As you can tell, I'm a huge fan! :-)

      2. Thank, and enjoy dinner tonight! Should you ever need rec's in Brooklyn I'd be happy to share : )
