I needed a dessert for the office Halloween potluck, so stopped into It's All Good, located on Martin Luther King in Oakland, near 60th Street (a few blocks north of Children's Hospital). Anyway, the peach cobbler was a bit runny, and didn't wow me, but was a hit with the office anyway, and pretty good reheated with some vanilla ice cream.

However, the Sweet Potato Pie (one can never bring too many desserts, even on Halloween, when one wants one's coworkers to be happy...) was delicious! Nice spicing, not too sweet, very nice crust. Recommended as a Thanksgiving alternative! They only had a few on Halloween morning right after opening, so might want to check availability...

They also had an incredible looking tall coconut cake: looked to be about four layers. Has anyone tried it?

Oh, that sweet potato pie makes me swoon. Perfectly spiced and smooth, and pleasantly firm filling. I haven't had the cocnut cake in years (since a friend worked there some time ago) but it was also great. Not as good as the sweet potato pie, but a winner nonetheless. Not overly sweet, good coconut flavor, nicely fluffy cake. Love that place.

They make what, about three things? Sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, and
some fancy birthday cakes. The peach cobbler, sadly, is made with canned
peaches even at the height of peach season. I really really want them to be
a lot better than they are, but they're not.

They make other types of cobbler as well, and cookies, but yes, I do think the peach cobbler was made with canned peaches, which is one reason I wasn't thrilled, though the pastry was nicely done...but as I say, go for the sweet potato pie.

I am going to try the coconut cake too and report back: it just looks so gorgeous that I am really hoping it is as good as Hunicsz says.

I'd call it a neighborhood rather than a destination bakery. But then, where would you go to get a really good sweet potato pie?

And best of all, the Egg Man at the Berkeley Farmer's Markets (Arthur Brown, or something?).

Yeah, I have to second Nation's sweet potato pie which is tons better than their pumpkin pie. The sweet pototo ... actually tart ... and lemon merangue are the two best pies at Nations.

Egg Man also sells the sweet potato pies at the Sunday Kensington market.

Will have to give It's All Good a try. I think I stopped by once and they were out of whatever it was that interested me. Thanks for the tip.

In defense of canned peaches, it is almost more traditional to use canned than fresh for this type of peach cobbler. Unless living in the South, canned peaches are the most cost-effective way to make a cobbler ... and even in the South canned peaches would be used outside of peach season. It would have the taste that many people might be looking for in a peach cobbler.

I've not tried Nation's sweet potato, so if you try it at Its All Good you will have to tell me what you think as a comparison.

Interestingly, we had a sweet potato tart at Aziza the other night. We didn't order it, but they comp'd it for us (for no particular reason that I could figure out. hubby decided they just made too many). Anyway, though the rest of the dinner was stellar, and I usually love Aziza's desserts, I thought it wasn't as good as the version at It's All Good: a bit sweeter, and richer, but not as flavorful....

Well, a long delayed response. Nations is not only in the same class as It's All good ... it's not even in the same galaxy. Nation's is a fine pie and one of the better of a sad lot in the Bay Area. It's All Good is better than most pumpkin pies I've tried.

Here's my report and what I thought of some of the other baked goods. Pecan pie is wonderful and I really liked that coconut cake.

Nope. They are canned-from-a-can peaches. I agree with rw, no one in
the Great American Peach Cobbler Zone would *ever* make a peach cobbler
with anything other than canned peaches. So in that sense, it's really
authentic. I guess I was just hoping the recipe would be modified to reflect
local tastes.

Also while you're there, spend some time checking out the Black Panther
information on the walls. Apparently the the Black Panther Tour was being
run out of the office next door, and there's a lot of really interesting local
history tacked up by the door.

Lintygmom, I totally agree. Sweet Adeline's a wonderful place. I really like the way they make their meringue.

It's a great place to go when you're just not sure what's going to satisfy your sweet tooth. They have sooo many items to choose from on any given day. Plus, Jennifer and crew are all very nice and helpful.
