Good "Real Lunch" in Manhattan

Where can I go in the City for a casual lunch that has a menu of real lunch foods? I'm talking about a great menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches - the food people really want to eat for lunch. I am also talking about a restuarant with waiter service - not a quick serve like Cafe Metro or Hale & Hearty. When I eat at my desk I go to those places. But sometimes I want to be able to be served by someone and eat on china, not paper, and not have to clean my own table. Of course there are an abundant amount of waiter service restaurants offering lunch, but I find most of their menus to be dinner dishes served for lunch. I like to eat soups, salads, or sandwiches for lunch. No one seems to offer an extensive menu of those things other than quick serve. I want something casual, too so I can get in and out quickly, no fuss. The closest thing I can typically find is Le Pain Quotidien, but their food is mediocre. And coffee shops and diners just don't have anything too sophisticated or upscale and I always worry about the quality. I have spent some time in LA and it seems there are more restuarants like this out there. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
