Holiday Entertaining
Over the holidays I will be entertaining friends from overseas. They are considered very chic and sophisticated people in their native land and, like me, have an aversion to anything hokey or touristy. Money is no object but I am NOT looking for a list of the most expensive places in town. I can find that in Zagat. Where do the really sophisticated and chic people dine in Boston?

I would suggest Meritage. It is an excellent place to dine with out of towners. You get the beautiful view of the harbor along with excellent food and wine pairings. Also cocktails at the Pru is good for the view. You could then go to the many, many South End restaurants that should satisfy your requirements.

Clio and/or Uni would be at the top of my list. Yes, both are quite expensive but also so delicious and innovative.
I'd also add either Neptune Oyster in the North End or B&G in the South End for a quality seafood experience that is not at all touristy or hokey.

I agree with Sorellina, Mistral, Clio, Uni, Neptune Oyster. I think the new Oishii also fits the bill, as does Salts and Toro.

Thank you for the chic (meaning stylish and elegant) recommmendations. I would also like my guests to enjoy a meal in a traditional holiday setting other than my home. Can hounds recommend an Inn or Country House? A rural version of Clio, for example.

The most beautiful restaurant in a country setting is Arrows in Ogunquit Maine. It is about 1.5 hours. They are serving Thanksgiving dinner. It is in a beautiful elegant old farmhouse and has wonderful food. It is indeed a rural version of Clio.

Thank you for the recommendation. I love Arrows but it's a bit far for us. Something of that ilk but closer would be ideal.
